Féile Preparations Underway

Our U14 squad and management continue with their preparations for Féile which takes place on 16-17 June. This is the first time since 2003 that the club will be represented at this national competition, when they will be hosted by the Clara club in Kilkenny. Their first two games are in Borris, Carlow where they will play Mount Leinster Rangers (Carlow) and Tooren (Mayo) on Friday 16 June. On Saturday 17 June they will play the host club in Clara before travelling to New Ross in Wexford for their next game, with opponents to be confirmed yet.

To offset against the significant cost of Feile, the management are looking for sponsors for a Féile souvenir programme that is being published to mark the club's appearance in Féile. The programme will be a fine publication carrying profiles of all players, photographs, articles and club/Féile information. If any individual or business would like to take an advert in the programme please contact Martin (087-2253350), Tommy (087-6523333) or Cormac (087-2353089).

The next league game for the U14s is V Clann na nGael in Castlepollard this Friday 19 May.

Southern Gaels 3-9 v 1-4 Ferbane/Belmont, May 8

Our U14’s played out a very entertaining hurling contest on the immaculate main Pairc Chiarain pitch. It was perfect for hurling and our boys played well all over the pitch. They are really gelling well as a team now with only a few weeks countdown to Féile. With large numbers we were able to trial and test lads in different positions and ensure everyone got sufficient match practice against a good Ferbane/Belmont team, which just didn’t get enough space from our defenders to score enough, but gave our lads a very good challenge match. Feile preparations are continuing well and lads playing hard to get a position in Féile were: Luke Whelan, Oisín Flynn, Cian O’Suilleabhain, Evan Farrell (Captain), Johnny Martin (1-1), Cian McCarthy (0-2), Michael Dolan, Seán Murphy, Cian Geary, Bobby Nugent (0-1), Rory Kilgarriff (0-3), Eoin Hardiman, Oisín O’Flaherty, Paidí O Leochain (1-1), Chulainn Dowd (1-1), Conn O Hara, Darragh Elliott, Ryan Fallon, Aaron Lynch, Cillian Geary.

Promotion in Town Centre

Southern Gaels go on tour next week when the club will take a stand on Saturday in the Athlone Town Centre to promote the great progress that has being made over the past few years. From 11am to 5pm club members will be available upstairs across from Harvest Café to talk about all that has been happening in the club and to promote our membership and support for our activities such as the upcoming trip to Féile. Representatives – members, mentors and parents – will be available to talk about what makes the club one of the fastest growing clubs in town with success on the playing fields of Westmeath and environs to match! It is expected to have posters, pictures, flyers, club gear, raffles, membership forms and sponsorship forms available for all visitors. Members please make yourselves available to call in fully kitted out for a chat and maybe a coffee – tell your mentor when you might be able to join us. If you’ve ever considered joining up now is your chance to “Rise Up and Hurl!”

U12s Vs Oliver Plunketts scheduled for Wednesday

Southern Gaels U12s welcome Oliver Plunketts to Páirc Chiaráin this Wednesday in the fourth round of the county league. The U12s sit top of Division 2 after successes against Fr. Daltons, Clonkill and Raharney in recent weeks. Plans are afoot to embark on a series of challenge matches against new combination club Na Piarsaigh(Turin and Lough Lene Gaels) and Ballinalsoe U12s. It is planned also to get a challenge match on the way to the Tipp/Cork clash this weekend when the club hits the road to Thurles for the start of the championship season.

Congrats to Kieran Duncan and Westmeath Senior Hurlers

It was with great pride that Southern Gaels celebrated the news that Westmeath are through to the Senior Leinster Hurling Championship with clubman Kieran Duncan on the panel. Fourteen man Westmeath ended the clash against Meath victorious in Cusack Park last Sunday setting up a clash against Offaly in the first round of the championship. This is a significant achievement and the team will be optimistic of beating a struggling Faithful County. It is great for the club to have Kieran playing at this level and he is paving the way for many more Gaels who have their sights set on a county jersey or two in the near future. Maith thú Kieran.
