Academy Hurling Activities

The focus of the Academy is to introduce the basic skills of hurling to young children.
We try to do this in a fun way to give them an interest in Hurling and learn the fundamentals through fun games and drills while they're holding and using the hurl properly.

Helmets and Hurls are provided, but we encourage kids to purchase them so that they can practice at home. Hurls are available to buy from the club at cost price (cheaper and better than those in local stores). Helmets are also available at cost price from the club.

Examples of Training Activities. Balancing, Throwing, Catching bean bags and sliotars, developing hand eye coordination, learning to hold hurl in correct hand and positions, striking ball on ground on both sides. Short races with bean bags balanced on hurls or head! When appropriate, we play short matches as they are always keen to show off their newly acquired skills. The focus is on setting the right hurling foundations and learning the skills rather than any competitive hurling.

End of Outdoor Fun Night

The end of Outdoor Season Partying continued for all Southern Gael Hurlers 12 and under on the 25th October with a FREE session in Athlone’s newest craze of JumpLanes. Based in Monksland, JumpLanes provided us all with a fun, friendly and challenging activity for all the energetic hurlers. JumpLanes has a 10 lane trampoline area which was thronged with our players over 2 hours with some also taking part in the competitive soccer pool area they have.

We a had an end of Season Medal Presentation to all the Academy Players in attendance. They’re the youngest, hardest working hurlers in the club, with the Level of attention and commitment from the players to such a high standard it makes it a privilege to train them and watch them develop into playing very competitively contested matches with all players determined and giving 110% to every tackle for their team. They’re coming on in leaps and bounds.

The latest sponsored Zenith Club Gear was also on Sale and such was the phenomenal uptake, all 80 tops are now SOLD OUT with over 50 more tops taken on order for members. Unfortunately No more of that stock is available – What an astonishing quick sale it was.

End of Outdoor Fun Night

The Academy Outdoor season for 2015 came to a close last night, with a fun filled night of Bowling, Adventureland and an extremely important Medal Presentation in The Planet last night, before they start Indoors again in November. Having started outdoors in early April after the Marist indoor program, the kids have had the chance to attend nearly 56 outdoor training sessions, run by Frank Lee, Tony O’Keeffe, Michael Cahill and many many parents. Attendance was great all year with numbers frequently exceeding 20. Training sessions were divided between skills and very competitively contested matches. Thanks to all parents who helped out at training during the year – it’s very much appreciated & your kids love it. Indoor Hurling, Here we come……..

2015 in Review

Indoor: The season started in January. There was a large attendance every night, focus and commitment was very good. Children were divided in small groups where Core skills of ground hurling and soloing were worked on. St.Patrick’s Day: attended in large numbers, they enjoyed marching through town displaying Hakka skills to friends, family and neighbours. Easter Egg hunt: took place in Marist Hall in March. They enthusiastically performed tasks during the session and were rewarded at the end of the session with a well-deserved Easter Egg afterwards. Outdoor: Started early April. We were proud to see some of the Academy move to the U8’s and welcomed many new members to the group. Attendance was good all year with numbers frequently exceeding 20. Training sessions were divided between skills and a match. Level of attention and commitment from the players was brilliant and makes it a privilege to train them. Training matches were very competitively contested with players determined to give 100% to their team. On the night of the U8 Darren O’Donnell tournament the Academy played a match among themselves under lights where they demonstrated the skills gained during the year to their proud parents. Thanks to all parents who helped out at training during the year – it’s very much appreciated & your kids love it.

Southern Gaels Academy in 2014:

Indoor:
started in February. Attendance and commitment was very good. Core skills of ground hurling and soloing were worked on.
St.Patrick’s Day: attended in large numbers, enjoyed marching through town displaying Hakka skills to friends, family and neighbours. Outdoor: mid-April. We were proud to see some of our members move to the U8’s and welcomed many new members to the group. Attendance was good all year with numbers frequently exceeding 15. Training sessions were divided between skills and a match. Level of attention and commitment from the players was brilliant and makes it a privilege to train them. Matches were very competitively contested with players determined to give 100% to their team. Easter Egg hunt: took place in Pairc Chiarain in April. Kids enthusiastically hunted for eggs hidden around the pitch, all enjoyed a well-deserved Easter Egg afterwards.
Matches: The academy played two matches against Brosna Gaels, one at the start of the season in May which we won and one at the end of the season in September which we narrowly lost. It is great to see the players demonstrating the skills they have learned in training in the matches. Thanks to Brosna Gaels for providing strong opposition to us as very few clubs have teams at this age. Several academy members played with the U8’s in matches against St.Rynagh’s and Lucan Sarsfield’s where they represented the club with pride and held their own against older children.

Friday, Sept 5th 2014 Pairc Chiarain v Brosna Gaels

Southern Gaels played local Offaly rivals Brosna Gaels in a thrilling encounter at Pairc Chiarain. Brosna Gaels started the first half very strongly displaying great team work and raced into a three goal lead. Southern Gaels came into the game in the second half playing with a higher level of intensity and moving the ball at speed from one end of the field to the other via good passing moves. Southern Gaels pulled one goal back and were unlucky not to score on a few more occasions. Both teams demonstrated the ground hurling, blocking and chasing skills they have learned during training. Refreshments were enjoyed by all after the match. Thanks to Brosna Gaels for travelling with their younger children to Athlone.

The squad for this game were: Aaron Hardiman, Cian Cahill, Ciaran West, Cillian Donlon, Conor Flynn, Dara Geary, Darragh Bradley, Donnacha Lee, Eoin Whelan, Padraig O’ Neill, Philip Heavey, Sam Fox, Shane Cahill, Van McCay

Tuesday, May 6th 2014 Pairc Chiarain v Brosna Gaels

First match of 2014 was very exciting. Every player arrived with great enthusiasm and were keen to get into the action despite the damp weather. The visitors did not have as many hurlers as Southern Gaels, so a few were swapped between the teams. It was evident the training was paying off, as all players chased down the sliotar and got some great strikes in. There was great support from the sidelines as each team tried vigorously to get a goal. In summary, it was a great night for Academy Hurling with the following Panel:

Dylan McDonnell, Cillian and Leigha Donlon, Dion Marshall,
Cian Cahill, Aaron Hardiman, Tadhg and Ruairí Dolan, Dara Geary, Ciaran West and Conor Flynn.

We teach the fundamentals of hurling in a fun way to 5, 6 & 7 year old boys and girls.

October 19, 2013 - Gathering

On Saturday 19th October 2013 as part of the clubs Gathering festivities the Academy played a 20 minute exhibition match demonstrating the skills they have learned during the year. Academy matches are based on ground hurling.

The game was a closely contested affair with a score of 1 goal each at half time. The Yellow team scored 4 goals in the second half, the Red team were very unlucky not to add to their total with some narrow misses and saves from the Yellow teams goalkeeper. There were excellent displays of ground hurling, blocking and tackling from all of the players. Credit to all of the players for their display of skills at such a young age.

After the match the teams paraded around the pitch behind the piper and then adjourned to the club house for some well-deserved refreshments.

All-Ireland Hurling Final Day Festivities, Replay, September 30th:  With the wind at his heels, Dermot Whelan, our Club Goalie, hit a belter to surpass the rest and take the Long Puck title for the players section - there'll never be a short-puck out again with the distance we now know Dermot can get!! For the Dads section it was Martin Geary who was able to out-puck the rest while Kieran McCarthy displayed the best for the Mentors category - let's hope he can coach his distance techniques to the young players. With Crisps and drinks for all the kids supporting, it was into the Clubhouse for the highly anticipated final. However, with most supporting Galway, it never really took off and the half-time grub was a welcome boost. So Congrats to Kilkenny and keep up the Long Puck practice to take next years titles.

GAA Coaching, Foundation Level 1 Course for Parents / Mentors: 20 & 22 Sept.
We had 15 in attendance and it was a great introduction to all the aspects of coaching to maximise participation, optimise playing standards and to ensure that all players’ needs are catered for in a balanced way. The practicals were good craic and hopefully the kids will have as much fun as we did trying them out.

Club BBQ, The Olive, Fri. 21st SeptThanks to all Academy Parents who turned up. It was great to see you all there and join into one of the many Club's social Events. Particular thanks must go to the Parents who supplied the Deserts (Simone, Gormla, Elaine and Elaine!). They were fabulous and more training is needed to run them off.

All-Ireland Hurling Final Day Festivities, Poc Fada, Páirc Chiaráin, September 9th: Poc Fada kicked off at 2.30 with allot of Academy players entering. There was some hotly contested categories, but none more than the "Mammies" group and a fantastic strike by one of our Academy Mammies:
'Sharon Cox' was not be beaten. Our Academy 2012, Southern Gaels Poc Fada Champions were:
Under 3: Dara Geary, Under 4: Sophie Slevin, Under 5: Daithí O Leochain, Under 6: Cillian Geary.
We all went into Clubhouse to watch the Final and get well fed at half time, before getting the Certificates after the final whistle.

August 5th Kids Olympics, Páirc Chiaráin. Fun Family Day with Kids Olympics Races, including 100m Sprint, Hurling Soloing, Sack Races, Egg and Spoon etc. All were very competitive, but none more than the Parents Egg and Spoon races - the officials will have to be more vigilant next year on monitoring the carrying techniques. We also had a large Bouncy Obstacle Course with refreshments for all the kids.
A very enjoyable evening and we all went to bed wrecked.

March 17th St. Patricks Day Parade. Best Creative Entry Award.  With great numbers dressed-up and painted in Club Colours and Novelty Hats, (including the Incredible Hulk) we scooped another great award, for a second year in a row.
