Longford Slashers bowed out of the Leinster Senior Club Football Championship following a disappointing defeat by the hands of Westmeath champions Garrycastle (for the second year running) at Cusack Park on Sunday.

Two first half goals from James Dolan set their wheels in motion and by the end of the half time interval, the Athlone men commanded a nine point advantage that they would never relinquish.

Almost nine weeks had passed since Longford Slashers played in their last competitive fixture (County Final against Clonguish) and as the game progressed at the Mullingar venue, the signs were all too evident. Only one of Longford Slashers four point total over the first half action came from open play, the remainder coming from converted frees.

Both sides traded a number of scores in the early exchanges, Mark Smith providing the fire power for Slashers while David O’Shaughnessy and the half- back line comprising of Karl Henson and Doran Harte raised the white flags for Garrycastle.

Midway through the first half, Anthony Cummingham’s side started to carve out an opening in proceedings with O’Shaughnessy and James Dolan stretching their lead out to three points. The Athlone side continued to dominate in the latter stages and two well taken goals by the potent James Dolan in the space of six minutes pushed their counterparts further onto the ropes.

Twelve minutes of the second half had expired before Slashers responded to Garrycastle’s goal blitz. A direct ball pumped forward by Niall Mulligan found first -half substitute Martin Nevin 15-metres from goal and like an express train, he cleared everything in his path before firing his shot to the back of Cathal Mullen’s net.

Slashers should have grabbed their second goal moments later when Colin Smith found himself in a goal scoring position, but his effort was cleared off the line by Garrycastle’s full-back John Gaffey.

Slashers purple patch ended soon after Smith goal mouth opportunity and Garrycastle reasserted their superiority with eight minutes remaining when James Duignan landed a fortuitous long range goal following from a 35-metre sideline free.

Garrycastle second half substitute Alan Daly finished the proceedings off when finding the back of the Slashers net once again in the closing stages of the contest.
