WEXFORD 1-WALL CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS 2013

After two years of ‘test marketing’ via weekend tournaments, 1-Wall handball finally took its place in Wexford’s official curriculum of events last weekend when the first ever County Championships were completed at St. Josephs Handball Centre in Wexford town.

108 players from 11 clubs took part in the championships which were played down to finals over a number of weeks and which were promoted in Men’s Open, Men’s B, Men’s C, Masters, Golden Masters, Women’s B, Boys 11 and under, 13 and under and 15 and under, as well as Girls 11 and under and 13 and under.

With interest in the code growing steadily across the county, the County Committee were forced by time constraints to limit the entries to four per grade or age group, per club. This was done to enable the championships to be completed ahead of the GAA Handball One-Wall Nationals being held next weekend at Breaffy House Sports Arena in Castlebar. And while that policy decision did restrict the numbers taking part in the actual championships, it also generated increased activity at local level with some clubs having to resort to play offs to select their representatives.Indeed that strategy may well be the key to reducing the numbers taking part in most of our national competitions, many with little or no hope of avoiding a heavy defeat. See County Secretary Tony Breen’s views on that matter below.

Men’s Open

Peter Hughes (BAH) dft Michéal Busher (BRT) 21-10

The scoreline belies the magnificent effort put in by Busher who led in the early stages and was still bang in contention with 5 minutes left. Hughes through is a gritty performer and in the end his overall class told. After this win and his victory over Paul Lambert in last year’s Open the Ballyhogue man is clearly established as Wexford’s best one-wall exponent.

Men’s B

John Roche (CAB) dft Phil Coleman (BAM) 23-20

The Castlebridge player has taken to this code with great enthusiasm and he needed all of that as well as considerable skill to see off the redoubtable Coleman who was playing his second final of the day.

Men’s C

Seamie O’Neill (BAM) dft Jason Barnwell (BAM) 19-16

This family affair was another epic encounter between the first cousins from Ballymitty. In the end the greater experience of O’Neill (a brother of County Chairman, Alan) was enough to see him through.

Masters

Phil Coleman (BAM) dft Damien Kelly (COG) 20-14

The Ballymitty stalwart has proved to be a difficult opponent for all and his hard hitting ensured he always had the talented Kelly on the defensive.

Golden Masters

Pechelli English (DAT) dft Tony Breen (TLU) 21-18

Both were experiencing the game for the first time at these championships and English was the more consistent over the 15 minutes. Breen had a bad middle third and paid the price.

Women’s B

Olivia Sweeney (STJ) dft Lorraine Maddock (STM) 19-16

A magnificent day for the Sweeney family as mum Olivia captured the title to add to her daughter Emma’s success at U13. Olivia has only been playing handball of any sort for a couple of years and already she has enjoyed considerable success. Lorraine played very well and pushed her all the way.

BU11

Richard Lawlor (STJ) dft Mark Doyle (STJ) 17-15 A.E.T

A magnificent encounter showcasing all that is good about our juvenile game. It took an additional 5 minutes to separate them before the older Richard saw off the terrific challenge posed by Mark.

BU13

Adam Walsh (STJ) dft Paraic Reville (BRT) 25-17

Adam again proved his prowess at this code with a polished performance against Paraic, a relative newcomer, who surprised many with his consistent displays throughout the championship.

BU15

Daniel Kavanagh (STJ) dft Patrick Boland (TLU) 25-16

For long periods a shock appeared on the cards as the younger Templeudigan player led the accomplished Daniel a merry dance. But like all good champions the St. Josephs youngster came back to see off Patrick by an, albeit, flattering scoreline.

GU11

Niamh Millar (BAM) dft April Moran (BAM)

The all Ballymitty final provided further evidence of the talent being nurtured by the most progressive club in the county and while the honours went to Niamh who was winning yet again, the performance of April, in her first year playing, was outstanding.

GU13

Emma Sweeney (STJ) dft Cora Doyle (STJ 21-16

It was a fully merited win for Emma who had won the under 11 two years ago and she showed tremendous fighting spirit in seeing off her clubmate in terrific style. It was a rare defeat for Cora but she is enjoying a wonderful seasonand she will continue to be a force.

Presentation

County Chairman Alan O’Neill presented all the winners and runner up with their medals afterwards and also presented all 13 under 9 players who took part in a blitz with special medals. They were, Ellie Murphy, Alanah Sinnott, Jodie Keeling, Bobby Doyle, Kaylem Codd, Gregory Furlong, Jack Murphy, Eoin Roche, Conor Millar, Oisin Moran, Ryan Moran, Jamie Barnes and Shane Kehoe.

‘B’ Grades and Public Perception

Wexford County Secretary, Tony Breen believes the time has come for players to earn the right to represent their club and county in all competitions “highlighting the huge numbers taking part in all these competitions looks great for our sport, but the logistics of running championships and competitions with such large numbers are becoming more time consuming and difficultand allowing everyone to enter without qualification seems an outdated policy at a time when the numbers continue to increase”. He feels more club competition would arise if entry into national competitions was restricted “we have diluted the honour of representing club and county by allowing players to enter without qualification and this has reduced the overall standard and status of our championships and competitions. It has also lowered the standard normally needed to represent your county, as a beginner can put on a county jersey and take to the court”. Our sport needs to have more pride in itself he said and “we need to place a higher value on the jersey and raise the bar for those who wish to wear it”.

Tony also has strong feelings about ‘B’ grades in Nationals and World Championships “in the public eye a Nationals or World championship ‘B’ winner is a National champion or World champion and this elevates the level of the achievement to that of an ‘A’ winner. This is patently unfair to the ‘B’ winner as it affords him/her a status that is unearned and which he/she will never live up to, while the far greater achievement of the ‘A’ player, who may for instance have lost out in the final of the ‘A’ grade, is diminished considerably” in the eyes of an unknowledgeable public. I ask all concerned to consider scrapping these ‘B’ grades immediately and to replace them with plate competitions”.

He concluded by saying we should have confidence in our ability to maintain and grow membership by investing in local units and by ensuring County Boards organise a full programme of competitions for their players. “I am aware that some county boards run few if any championships and instead depend on provincial and national administrators to provide competitions for ‘their’ players. We need to persuade and assist these units so they discharge their obligations to GAA Handball and its members”
