What is "Targeted Services?"

  • The Sebeka Elementary Targeted Services Program is funded through the Freshwater Education District by the state of Minnesota. Services are provided by the Sebeka Public School.

  • The Targeted Services (TS) Program is a year-long program that begins in the summer.

  • TS Teachers are all Elementary Certified and work with a variety of age levels on any given day. This is purposeful.

    • Our belief is that children benefit from having several teachers, each with their own unique personality and teaching style.
    • Teachers and students are able to build a close relationship in our small setting, within a "Family-Style" small school system, in which all teachers and support staff know and care about all students.
    • TS Teachers and Paraprofessionals create a bond that lasts through the years when they work with students from Kindergarten through sixth grade in a summer and after school program with low student-teacher ratio.
  • Student:Teacher Ratio is low, with it as close to 11:1 as possible.

  • Purpose of the Targeted Services Progam: To strengthen students' reading, written language, and math through alternative or different methods of instruction and a low student-teacher ratio. Social skills are taught and practiced through listening to specific books and discussion, small group work, games, and activities. Physical activity is scheduled into the summer and after school programs.

  • Sebeka Elementary has a July summer program of 14-16 partial days, 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m., with a full field trip day based on the theme.

    •  Free breakfast and lunch are served to all students. This is a time of socialization as well, with students sitting together, mixed grade levels (younger grades mixed, older grades mixed).  Targeted Services staff are with the students at this time, supervising and helping.
    • Thematic Study (varies annually): 2013: Howling Adventures: The Study of Wolves, 2014: "Let's Fish: The Study of Freshwater Fish," 2015: "The Bear Facts: The Study of Black and Grizzly Bear," 2016: "The Learning Tree: The Study of Trees"
  • The Targeted Services (TS) Program resumes in October and is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school (3:00-5:10 p.m.) from October through the first week in May.

    • Free light "meal" served at 3:00 p.m.
