Michael Thompson was recently selected by the Oconee County School District along with the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office to the position of School Resource Officer for the Elementary Schools in the Westminster area. Michael is a 1988 graduate of Pickens High School and a graduate of Tri-County Tech with an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice.Michael started his career in Law Enforcement in 1991 working for South Carolina Department of Corrections then moved to Liberty Police Department. Michael has worked for Easley, Central and Seneca Police Departments throughout his long career and has even worked as a full time firefighter for the Seneca Fire Department. In 2008, Michael went to work as a subcontractor to the State Department working in Iraq training police officers and spent almost 4 wonderful years working with people from all over the world training and running NATO operations in a foreign land in an attempt to provide a safe foundation to build a strong Iraqi nation. When Michael returned stateside, he went to work for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility until he could return to serving the community that he lived in and went to work for the Oconee County Sheriff’s office where he has been employed for almost three and half years. Prior to being blessed with the Resource Officer position, Michael was a night shift Corporal for road patrol along with serving on the Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and Dive Team.Michael considers himself to be very lucky to be married to his wonderful wife Tammy for 15 years and has four wonderful children, and three grandchildren. In 2015, Michael was given the wonderful opportunity to be named the West Oak Middle School’s Head Baseball Coach and will continue to coach that program and hopefully will be able to assist with other sports as well as helping with the High School baseball program.
Michael looks forward to getting to know as many of you as he can and will work hard to build your confidence in the Sheriff’s Office and the School Boards direction of safety and mentoring your children while they are in his care. Michael believes that as a community we need to work together for a safer and better tomorrow for our children.
