SEVIS Check-In Instructions

Upon your arrival to Clemson, you are required by U.S. immigration law to enroll full-time and complete the SEVIS check-in within 15 days of your program start date. Once you have completed these steps, your SEVIS record will change from Initial to Active. Your SEVIS record must be in Active Status in order to begin any on-campus work and to be eligible for any benefits including a social security card or driver’s license.

We recommend you obtain electronic copies of the following documents before starting your check-in process. You will be required to upload these documents as part of the check-in.
The SEVIS Check-In is completed online through your Student iStart portal. Please read the instructions below to assist you with completing this process:
  1. Enroll full-time in degree required coursework 
    • Graduate students starting their program in spring and fall terms should enroll in 9 credit hours. Graduate students starting their program in the summer should enroll in 6 credits. 
    • Undergradute students should enroll in 12 credits whether their program starts in spring, summer, or fall. 
  2. Visit the student portal ( and complete the New Student Information Check-In e-Form under the Orientation Tab on the left.
  3. If you are a Graduate Assistant or student athlete and need to apply for a Social Security Card, be sure to upload your Employment Verification Letter (EVL) within the Employment Eligibility Verification Letter Upload e-Form under the University Employment Tab on the left.
    • The EVL form should be given to you by your host department.
During orientation, there will be an opportunity for you to complete and receive help with the check-in process.
