Bell work

Q: What’s is/are the solution(s)? Roots? Zeros? X-intercepts?

The work from Tuesday-Wednesday will be collected on Thursday for a grade!!!

Make sure you are ready to hand it in on Thursday at the beginning of class.

Today in Class:      Lessons 10.1-10.2 Graphing & Solving Quadratic Equations

Today we will learn and then practice 7 basic steps so we can accurately sketch and label the parabola for a given quadratic equation.

First, we’ll learn about the discriminant, b2 – 4ac.

The discriminant tells us important information about the location of the parabola on the coordinate plane. (It’s actually part of another formula that we’ll explore on Friday.)

Write down this information:

If b2 – 4ac > 0, then there are 2 real roots (the graph crosses the x-axis at 2 points)

If b2 – 4ac = 0, then there is 1 real root (the graph touches the x-axis at 1 point)

If b2 – 4ac < 0, then there are NO real roots (the graph NEVER crosses the x-axis)

Follow these steps to graph a Parabola:

1. Use ‘a’ to determine the max or min.

2. Find the Axis of Symmetry (x = – b/2a)

3. Find the vertex (x, y)

4. Find the y-intercept: (0, c)

5. Use the discriminant to learn about the number of real roots. (b2 – 4ac)

6. Find the roots by factoring, setting x = 0, & then solving for x. Write as a point, (x, y)

7. Sketch and Label the parabola based on the above information.

HW: Using lined paper, write-out steps 1-7 as listed above for problems #1-6 on the 10.1 Parent-Student Study Guide. We did #1-2 in class, so start with the next one on the list.

Bell work

Today in Class:  Lessons 10.1-10.2 Graphing & Solving Quadratic Equations

HW: Using lined paper, write-out steps 1-7 as listed above for problems #6-9 on the 10.1 Parent-Student Study Guide. You should now have all of these problems completed.

Thursday

4/23

For the past few days, you have been calculating the axis of symmetry, vertex, discriminant, and the roots of quadratic equations to graph parabolas.

(You should be proud of your hard work!)

Today, we will use our computers for two things:

1. We will explore the definition of a parabola by adjusting its focus and directrix.  Your goal is to match the shape of the parabola to each picture.

2. In the GeoGebra file, you will adjust the sliders to see what causes the parabola to move around the coordinate plane. You should look for these patterns: shifting up/down/right/left, stretching wider or shrinking thinner.  Also, what makes it go flat?

First, read about the definition of a parabola and then explore its meaning by adjusting the focus and directrix to change the shape of the parabola.  Go through all 4 investigations about the definition of a parabola by accessing this link: Parabolas By Definition
