Social Studies Information and Resources

As students learn about early American History, they will be utilizing their reading, writing, and speaking skills in cross-curricular units.  Students' social studies grade will be largely based on the completion and quality of projects such as :
  • 5 Themes of Geography State Research, Map and Essay
  • Causes and Effects of the American Revolution Timeline Project
  • Whig vs Tory Revolutionary Skit
  • Revolutionary Figure Research paper, artistic representation and oral presentation
  • Government Booklet on the Three Branches of U.S. Government, analysis of Bill of Rights, and participation in Congressional Simulation
  • Westward Expansion Historical Fiction Journal
  • Washington State CBA (Curriculum Based Assessment) on Checks and Balances
  • Industrial Revolution/Inventors oral presentation
  • Invention Fair
  • Civil War "Letters Home"
Students will also be expected to delve into current events. Every other week students are to turn in a FHL (Future History Log) and are given preassigned due dates.  These assignments are not accepted for late credit.  World, national, state and local news articles found from online and print news sources are acceptable places to find stories.  Students are encouraged to read from a variety of topics from articles of significant length.  The FHL requires students to write a MLA bibliographic citation, summary of the 5 Ws and 1 H (Who, What, Where, When, Why and How), to state their opinion on the matter, and develop two unanswered questions for further discussion.

Throughout the year students will have practice writing bibliographies and using parenthetical citation in research papers.

A student's Social Studies grade will be weighted as follows:

10% = Current Events (FHLs)
10% = Participation (group activities, entry tasks)
20% = Quizzes and Tests
30% = Assignments (in-class and homework)
30% = Projects
