Setting up for Meteors and More

We spent a few hours on Sunday getting the Discovery Room set up theater style for our upcoming Meteors and More program on Saturday, November 13.  This is our second official program in the Discovery Room and we've learned something new each time.  Last year's Meteors and More program drew over 100 guests and we needed to figure out seating for that many.  We were able to combine our new chairs with some of the chairs left over from the restaurant to provide seating for 95.  Our new TV should be installed this week just in time for the program!

From buffet to display

Our Mountain Cove Discovery Room is beginning to look less and less like its former life.  The buffet is really the last vestige of the restaurant.  We have already begun using the old buffet to display some interpretive exhibits.  We will also be using it to house our new TV for presentations and videos.

Unfortunately, the buffet simply doesn't offer enough room for a TV as big as we need.  We came up with the idea of building a small bridge over the old sneeze guards to set the TV on.  The fabulous maintenance staff at Red Top came up with an even better idea.  They extended the old sneeze guards with some expert carpentry and even found the original tile.  They are working to provide a much more finished look!  Here's a look at the progress!  You can see the tile sitting on the bar waiting to be installed.

A place to park

After the Mountain Cove Restaurant closed, many of the furnishings were reappropriated to other sites in the state park system.  For seating, we were left with 34 heavy, very heavy, restaurant chairs.  While they were a good start, we know they won't hold full crowds at some of our more popular programs.  Today, we unloaded 50 brand new folding chairs.  They're very nice.  But most of all, they're very light!  Guests will certainly enjoy their new "parking spots."

First program held in Mountain Cove Discovery Room

After a successful day of volunteering, park guests were treated to a snake program in the room that will soon be the Mountain Cove Discovery Room.  Imagine our surprise when about 75 people showed up for a snake program!!

The plastic is down!

The windows lining the old restaurant had been covered with plastic since the lodge officially closed this summer.  On SAVE My State Parks Day, volunteers helped to get rid of it!  Thanks to all who attended and helped us take this first important step toward our new Mountain Cove Discovery Room!
