Upstander's Program

Who? 5th grade students

What? Upstander's are 5th grade teacher nominated peer leaders.  An Upstander is someone who takes action on behalf of others.  An Upstander can wear many hats.  Some of the responsibilities will be : peer mediation/conflict resolution, patrol DPA/recess, Big Buddy peer tutoring, as well as assisting the School Counselor in school wide activities when necessary.

Where? JJCS (recess, lunch, classroom, bus, hallway, etc.)

When? Upstander's mediate peer issues when the need arises.  They also patrol DPA/recess  during the month to assist any students who may be having issues making friends, playing with others fairly or playing alone.

Why? Because we can all us a little help from our friends:)  5th grade Upstander's are positive peer role models and are here to help a friend in need any day of the week.

How? You can become a 5th grade Upstander by teacher recommendation.  Characteristics are listed below.

**Please note that Peer Mediation and Conflict Resolution is not for bullying or fighting, or used as an alternative to our Principal for disciplinary use.  Peer Mediation is for issues like, but not limited to: teasing, rumor spreading, gossip, friendship issues, etc. **

 Objectives of the Peer Mediation Conflict Resolution training 

  • Identify the problem(s) causing the conflict
  • Understand the other person’s point of view
  • Explore cooperative solutions
  • Determine the appropriate solution and the method for implementing that solution
