The Universal Pre-Kindergarden (UPK) Extension program was created because NYS recognized the need for preschool but did not take into account that half day programs do not meet the care needs of many working families.

This program runs 41 weeks, beginning the first day of public school and lasting until the last day of public school. The children are picked up at 11:15 after the morning UPK session and escorted to our room to eat a lunch (brought from home) and participate in a full afternoon of activities. The program is open until 5:30 p.m.

The UPK Extension Program includes a wide range of activities. The activities include: daily outdoor games, use of the playground, indoor play, use of the gym, group activities, circle time and crafts.

The UPK Extension Program is an annual (41 week) program that costs $125 per child per week. You must commit to full weeks. The program can have up to 15 children, however we must have at least 12 children signed up annually before we can run it.

GOWANDA UPK Extension Program

The Gowanda UPK (Universal Pre-Kindergarten) program is located in the Gowanda Elementary School on Aldrich Street in Gowanda, New York.  The program was started in 1999 as a half day program.  In 2000 the program expanded to a morning and afternoon class and in 2001 a full day class was added.

The 2011-2012 school year was the start of a partnership with Campus and Community Children’s Center and the Gowanda Central School District to administer the UPK program.

The goal of the program is to provide school readiness experiences for district 4 year olds.  These experiences enhance social/emotional skills, improve large and small motor skills, and encourage language development.   Activities are designed to be hands-on, open-ended and exploratory in nature.  Interest areas are set up for children to explore math/science, dramatic play, literature, arts and crafts, and music connected with themes throughout the year.  Individual, small and large group activities are used to meet each child’s needs.
