Following the wrap up of our podcast project, students will have the time to revisit the narrative elements in an exploration of science fiction. Using short stories, poetry and their self-selected science fiction novel, students will explore worlds unknown and discover how authors use the same narrative elements of plot, setting, characters, conflict, and theme to create an out of this world experience. Close attention will be paid to articulating and tracking the development of themes in a text, as science fiction stories often serve as social commentary and warnings for humanity.
For May and June, students are going to read and participate in a science fiction book club. All students have chosen their book club book and should be reading nightly as well as bringing their book into class to use as needed. They have a calendar that indicates what page they should be reading up to daily, as well as the days they will meet to discuss with their book club groups.
Students will be tasked with creating a campaign poster or a pamphlet to raise awareness about the global issue or public concern featured in their science fiction book club book. More details on the project can be found below.
