Overview of Subjects

Language Arts:

Remember to monitor your child's printing to ensure they're printing left to right, on the lines, using proper letter formation.
Tall letters much reach the top line, half size letters must not go above the dotted line.
Do not let letters touch when printing and leave a space between words when writing.

Please encourage your child to hold their pencil properly.

It is expected that student learn to use upper and lower case letters appropriately with no letter reversals by the end of grade one.

Students should now be practicing reading and recognizing the pre primer words.
In the classroom they are working on reading level A booklets or a higher level if they are able.

Letter Sounds and Symbols

We are reviewing letter sounds to strengthen reading and writing skills.

Students are practicing writing and reading patterned sentences at this time.
Students are also encouraged to generate their own sentences if they are able.

We are currently working on numeration ( reading & writing numbers different ways)
We will soon begin Patterning -Unit 1

We are working on  Our World, School and Community.

We are working on   Seasonal Changes

Snacks and Lunch:

1L does not have a microwave.  Please prepare a lunch that is not required to be heated.
We have snack time right before morning recess at 9:35 to 9:50 on Mondays to Fridays.
Please send a snack with your child in addition to the regular lunch.
(The office does not heat up food.)

Please send/drop off lunch
"at the office" before 11:55 a.m.

Don't forget to provide a water bottle for your child to have access to drinking water each day.  They can fill their water container from the water dispenser provided in the hallway.

The email for hot lunch orders has been forwarded to parents.  If you did not receive it please let me know.

Dress for the weather:

The children are expected to wait outside in the supervised playground before the bell rings in the morning.  Do not drop off students before 7:55 in the morning.  Supervision starts at 7:55 a.m.

Parents, please encourage your child to play outside with other students.  There is a supervisor on the playground area every morning before school starts.  Students will be allowed to wait inside if it is raining or colder than minus 20.

At this time of year a change of clothing would be useful if your child gets mud or water on thier clothing.

Please put the clothing in a ziploc bag at the bottom of their book bag.

There is more information about school procedures and rules at the front pages of your child's agenda.

Agenda/Homework needs to be read and signed.
Please read and sign the agenda daily if you haven't already started.

A homework booklet to help study the pre primer words will be sent home this week.
Four reading pages to be completed each week.
Homework will only be assigned Monday to Friday each week. No homework on weekends unless they are getting behind in mastering their words before each term.

Homework they can do every day if no homework assigned
-Reading and printing sight words ( printing and saying the words daily improves word recognition for reading and writing.)
-Cutting and tracing practice.  (Improves fine motor skills)
-Printing upper and lower case letters appropriately. (Good habit for neatness and conventions)
-Writing and reading numbers from 1 to 100.  (Writing numbers helps students remember numbers)

Below you will find links to sight words flashcards and powerpoints of all three levels needed for grade one.
You will also find a list of 25 ideas to help your child study the words.
