Welcome

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I would like to take a moment to welcome you and your child to grade four.  I am really looking forward to the upcoming school year as well as the opportunity that I am going to have to work with your child.  In order for us to have a successful year I have compiled some important information you will need throughout the year.

BELLS

First Bell 8:05

Second Bell 8:10

Dismissal 2:45

SNACKS AND WATER BOTTLES

Please send a recess snack every day (even on hot lunch days and on Fridays) as minds at work need energy.  Students are also encouraged to bring a water bottle that can be refilled at school.  Water bottles should have a spout or straw to drink from to prevent major spills in the classroom.  As well, bottles will go home each night for cleaning.

LUNCH HOUR 11:50 - 12:30

Students go out for recess during the first half of lunch (11:50-12:07) and eat lunch during the second half of the lunch hour (12:10-12:30).  In grade 4, students will not have “babysitters”, as they are older now, however, there will be teacher supervisors that will move from class to class. If you need to bring your child lunch, please drop it off at the office and they will be called down to get it after the bell rings.

YOU ARE MORE THEN WELCOME TO COME EAT AT LUNCH AT OUR MANY TABLES THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL :) please just note children are only allowed out with relatives for inclusion purposes.

SHOES

Please ensure that your child’s indoor shoes are very grippy (no skateboard shoes) as they need to be safe for gym.  Students should also be able to tie their shoes easily if they have laces.  Also, please only send dressy shoes to school on special days as they have no grip and are dangerous on the tile floors and in the gym.

Deodorant is promoted in a basket in the class to apply after physical activities. :)

LATES

If you are running late please have your child go in through the front door and stop at the office to collect a late “slip” (new this year) before coming to class.  Please be aware that your child is recorded late if they are not in the classroom by 8:10.

VOLUNTEERING

During the school year, there will be many opportunities to volunteer both in and out of school.  All volunteers require a current (in the last 2 years) criminal record check on file with the school.  If you have not done so yet, and think you may want to volunteer sometime during the year, please pick up a letter from the office that will allow you to have your check completed free of charge at the police station.

CONTACTING YOUR CHILD

If you need to contact your child during the school day please go to the office to leave items, messages, or to pick him/her up for an appointment; the office will then page the classroom.  Emails are not guarantee to be read throughout the day as I am busy working with the students and never have a phone or rarely sit to read them :)

BOOT ROOM AND HALLWAY

The grade 4 assigned door is located at the front of the school, just to the left of the parking lot facing the school.  Once inside, students will remove their outside footwear and place them on the floor neatly in a row.  Due to the large number of students in the school it is important that students always use their own door, even when meeting parents.

PARKING

Parking is at a premium with such a large staff, so we ask that you please do not park in or use the parking lot for dropping off and picking up students.  Also, please let anyone who drops off/picks up your child know this as well.

MY NUMBER ONE "EXPECTATION" IS community/respect/inclusion.

KEEPING IN TOUCH

It is really important to me as a teacher to keep parents involved in their child's school life.  To that end, there will be numerous things that I will be doing throughout the school year.  First off, attached is a student information form that I need you to fill out and return as soon as possible.  Also, email is my preferred method of communication and most class notices will come by email. I often scan and email notices as they often get lost! I will send copies that need to be signed at times however so still check your child's baggie.  If you are having email difficulty, please let me know so that we can arrange an alternate way to communicate in order for you to stay in the loop.  In addition, I will be updating our classroom website on a regular basis, so you can check there for information including what we are covering in school, resources for students, as well as any important dates to consider. The link is posted at the bottom of each of my emails. Our newsletter is also posted on our district site : http://fmcschools.ca/

Our school newsletter is posted on our school website: http://sistermaryphillips.fmcschools.ca/

NO AGENDAS IN OUR CLASS: I believe in using every moment for classroom work and will do daily writing other ways. Our class will just use email, I-remind and GOOGLE CLASSROOM. If a notice goes home I will send a reminder.

I also don't believe in "homework" - I BELIEVE in routines.. reading nightly is important and highly recommended at 20 mins a night asking prompting questions after THEY read to you. I will entrust everyone is doing this. I will post helpful sites and MATH recommendations to work on, check this site/google classroom.

I don't have a "Spelling homework philosophy" as I was trained to work on "words their way" and "grammar".

If you have any questions or would like to talk to me for any reason, please feel free to contact me at the school 780-799-5720 from 3-5 pm or by email mb4241@fmcsd.ab.ca. I will get back to you as soon as possible. I am open to set up appointments to have 1 on 1 conversations as well.
