My name is Yvette Friesen and I am from the Mikisew Cree Nation, born and raised in the Fort McMurray area. As the FNMI Liaison at Father Turcotte School I am excited to be a part of the cultural teachings for all students from Early Entry to Grade 6. Along with the teacher, I provide support for the social studies curriculum as the students learn about First Nations, Metis, and Inuit cultures. Through smudging, art, and connecting to the community resources, together we educate all students in the history, culture, and traditions of FNMI.
The role of the FNMI is multi-dimensional. I am able to assist our aboriginal families in connecting with the school, providing academic support, facilitating spiritual guidance, promoting academic programs and bringing cultural activities to the school. Father Turcotte School is diverse in many cultures from around the world and I am happy to be able to share the rich history of my culture with others.
