Mr. Anthony Gillespey
Meet the teacher:
I am so excited to start the new year with each and every one of you. I have taught for over 27 years now and I am just as excited today to meet you as my first year teaching. So whether you have me as your algebra , geometry, or academy teacher, welcome to my class. I hope to instill in you a love of math that will stay with you for a life time. I think you will find as many students have said that I am a teacher that is slightly very weird but fun with very high expectations.
I graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso with a degree in Education and a minor in Mathematics. I have taught 7th grade and 8th grade Mathematics, Algebra 1, and Geometry. I currently teach SAIL Algebra and Pre-AP Geometry, and an awesome class called Math Academy. Math Academy is an elective for kids who love math. Yes, they do exist!!!
In 2013, I was the Secondary Teacher of the year for the Flour Bluff School District. I am currently the Math Department chair, and I work very hard at trying to help our school grow into the amazing school we have the potential to be.
I am the coach of the Flour Bluff Junior High Academic Team. We have an amazing team at our school. We are the State TMSCA Champions for 38 years in a row in 5A. I am also the coach of our school’s MathCounts team. We are currently the Regional MathCounts Champions.
It is said you can tell a person’s passion by what they want to talk about. I love mathematics, but even more than that, I love teaching. There is nothing I like more than talking education with other professionals. I consider teaching an art, and teachers the artists. Your children are my canvas, my goal for each of you is that your will leave my class with a love of math and a confidence to do whatever you want in life.
For the Parents:
My Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy can best be described by this analogy:
If a surgeon performs a surgery and doesn’t make a single mistake–and the patient still dies–the surgeon does not pat himself on the back and consider it a successful surgery. Likewise, if I do everything I know to do in my efforts to reach a child yet fail to change that child in a positive way, then “the surgery” was not successful. A child’s failure is my failure. I have to be willing and able to continue to try things with a student until I find what it will take to change that student. In education, there are certain things that every teacher is required to do: teach the lesson, cover the standards, call parents for failures, and be professional. Teaching is not a bunch of boxes that need to be checked off. Doing the bare minimum does not reach children. I must be willing to do whatever it takes for every child to be successful.
I have found over the years that holding myself to that standard made me a better teacher. I want to promise you that I will try and do everything I can to reach your child and help them to reach their potential.
My promise to you as parents is that I will always strive to push your child to be the absolute best they can be as both a students and citizen.
