AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is offered as an elective class that prepares students for entrance into four-year universities.  There is an emphasis on analytical writing, preparation for college entrance and placement exams, study skills, test taking, note taking, and research.

AVID 1 is the first in a four-year elective program in which the common goal is to prepare all qualified students for college admission.  The course focuses on enrolling students in a rigorous course of study which meets the “A-G” requirements of the University of California and California State University systems, while providing a strong academic and motivational support system.  During the AVID period, students are coached by college/academic tutors twice a week and also work in collaboration using a curriculum focused on reading, writing, and inquiry.
