Course Title: Algebra

Course Description: Ninth grade Algebra seeks to develop a logical progression of ideas, as using variables to replace numbers. Topics to be explored include using inverse operations to solve equations and inequalities, complex fractions, radicals, factoring polynomials, graphing equations, and solving word problems - all with the goal of developing higher level thinking skills.

Goals/Course Objectives: This course is designed to prepare you for geometry and entry level math for most basic competency exams.

Methods of Instruction: Lecture, smart board presentation

Attendance/Behavior Expectations: Absences (for any reason) that result in 10% or more of lost instruction time will result in a failing grade. Three instances of lateness will equal one absence. If a student must miss class, it is the student’s responsibility to make up lost instruction time. In order to benefit from class instruction and activities, it is important to come prepared to participate and to follow the instruction. This means not only completing homework, but also prepared with pen/pencil, notebook, calculator, and the willingness to contribute. It is expected that all students will be on time and ready for class so that instructional time will not be wasted.

Late Work Policy: If a student is absent when work is assigned, s/he is given the same amount of time to turn it in. If a student knows of an assignment/due date, but is absent on the due date, it is to be turned in on the first day the student returns . 1 day late = half off grade earned, 2 days late = zero .

Assessment of Grades: Class work/Homework/Notebook 20%, Quizzes 30, Tests 50%

The final grade for the year will be an average of the four-quarter term grades and the Finney final exam, which counts for 20% of the final grade.

General Course Assignments (subject to change): Expect hw from each section we cover. There will be at least 1 quiz in each chapter and 1 test. We cover approximately 12 chapters.
