Steps to Respect: A Bullying Prevention Program, is taught in all 3rd - 5th grade classrooms at Hedden Elementary. Mrs. Allen visits each classroom in those grades and teaches lessons which focus upon:
Friendship-making skills
How to recognize bullying
Bullying refusal skills
Reaching out to someone who is being bullied
Bullying reporting skills
The Steps to Respect program is a research-based curriculum which is designed to decrease bullying and establish a safe, caring and respectful school climate.
Within the above categories, topics such as the following are discussed:
Learning the difference between tattling vs. reporting
Developing emotion-management skills
Managing conflicts
Problem solving
Assertiveness when refusing bullying
Practicing the 3 R's of bullying - Recognize, Refuse, and Report
Second Step: A Violence Prevention Curriculum, is taught in all 2nd grade classrooms at Hedden Elementary. Mrs. Allen visits each classroom in 2nd grade and teaches a series of lessons on:
Identifying feelings in self and others
Responding with empathy
Impulse control
Problem solving
Social skills
Anger management
Calming techniques
