Washington State Board of Education
New Graduation Credit Requirements
  • To better prepare students to be career and college ready, the Washington State Board of Education (WSBE) has increased the number of required high school credits to 24. The purpose of this change is to prepare students for college, career, and life. In the 2014 Session, the Legislature passed Senate Bill 6552, legislation which establishes the 24 Credit Career and College Ready graduation requirements which include:
    • Credits: 24
    • Non-Credits: a High School and Beyond Plan and Washington State History (usually taken in middle school);
    • State Test Assessments
  • State graduation requirements change in 2019, however the Fife School District along with other districts in the state have a two year waiver for implementation which means the new credit requirements take effect for the graduation Class of 2021.
  • The WSBE sets state graduation requirements and believes the new credit requirements and new learning standards will help all students graduate prepared for their next steps in life and a meaningful career and college ready diploma.
  •  The Fife School District currently provides 24 traditional credit opportunities which allow students to earn the number of credits needed to graduate under the new requirement. The district has worked to expand opportunities for students to earn additional high school credits to ensure they have the opportunity to earn 24 credits if circumstances occur that a student needs to retrieve or make up credits in order to meet the new credit requirement.
