*What the students will learn…
Topics in FACS is a semester course that will cover a wide variety of topics. One section of this class will help the students understand decision making, values, goals, needs vs. wants, budgeting, saving, credit, check writing, balancing a check book, writing a deposit slip, understanding a bank statement and identity theft.
Another section of this course is a beginning course designed for the student with minimum experience in food preparation. This class allows students to build fundamental skills to store and prepare basic foods. Units of study include: safe and sanitary food preparation practices, basic nutrition, cooking terms, equipment and the study of MyPlate. Teaching methods include: food lab demonstrations, worksheets, activities, projects and food preparation labs.
This class is important because:
*Money gives people - both young and older - decision-making opportunities. Everyday spending decisions can have a far greater negative impact on most people’s financial future than any investment decisions they may ever make. Educating, motivating and empowering these students to become regular savers and investors will enable them to keep more of the money they earn and do more with the money they keep!
2. *In today’s fast paced world, the
knowledge of food preparation and nutrition is a matter of survival. Not only do students need to understand basic
nutrition, they also need to be able to apply those principles to their
lives. Adolescence is an important time
to establish these skills.
