Theory of optical and THz processes in carbon-based nanostructures
GNR vs. CNT

The proposed research is in the area of the theory of electronic and optical processes in carbon-based nanostructures, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene. This study aims to contribute towards the understanding of light-matter interaction in novel carbon-based nanomaterials and creating a theoretical basis for their prospective use in terahertz optoelectronics. The project includes calculations of interband optical transition rates in narrow-gap carbon nanotubes, such as absorption in the optical range of frequencies and emission in the terahertz range. Special attention will be paid to collective excitations such as excitons and plasmons. Another focus of this project will be on various geometrical configurations enhancing light-matter interaction, such as microcavities and patterned graphene nanoribbons.
