Chromebook Tips

Q: I'm having a problem with my Chromebook, what should I do?
A: Shutdown and reboot the Chromebook.  If you have looked for the answer here and nothing has helped please come to the Helpdesk for assistance.  Remember your device must be in the bag zipped up when it's not in use.  Also if you are having a problem with a website or software Google Search is your friend.

Q: How do I shutdown/reboot my Chromebook?
A: Shutting the lid simply puts your device to sleep.  It's still using battery life and is in sleep mode.
Hitting the Refresh + Power will do a reset and the device should turn off and back on.
To turn off, hold the power button until the power light goes off.  This could take up to 30 seconds.

Q: Youtube videos won't play, you get error messages, or any other site does not seem to be working properly?
A: First try and refresh the page by either hitting the  icon or button on your Chomebook.
If the video still does not play you will need to Clear all your browsing data.
  1. Click the Chrome menu Chrome menu on the browser toolbar. Select More ToolsSelect Clear browsing data.
  2. In the dialog that appears, select the checkboxes for the types of information that you want to remove.
  3. Use the menu at the top to select the amount of data that you want to delete. Select beginning of time to delete everything.
  4. Check all boxes except for Passwords and AutoFill
  5. Click Clear browsing data.
  6. Restart your Chromebook.
If the video still does not play, turn your device off completely and try again.  You may need to clear your browsing data one more time.

Q: Where is a good place to store all my bookmarks across any device to my google account?
A: Google Bookmarks: http://bookmarks.google.com

Q: How can I charge my Chromebook at school?
A: You are NOT to bring your charger to school.  New Samsung chargers are $60 if damaged or lost, they serve as a pressure point if carried in the pouch and cause cracked screens, and pose tripped hazards when plugged into outlets in classrooms.

You may bring your Chromebook to the help-desk located in the library at any time to charge without penalty if you have a free period and don't require a loaner.  Before school, during study hall or lunch, or during any class that you won't be using it are perfect times.  If you can not find an available charger, please let someone at the help-desk know and they will find a charger.

Q: What can I store in the Pouch?
A: Only very flat items.  The pouch can be used to carry your power cord from one place to another, but should NEVER be brought to school.  However, once you reach your destination you should remove anything from it to minimize potential damage to your Chromebook.  Even small items could be potential pressure points if heavy objects are placed upon them.  It should not be used to store anything.

Q: How do I add the Freeburg High School Calendar to my Google calendar?
A: Go to www.fchs77.org, click on Calendar of Events, above the calendar and to the right click on iCal Subscribe.   You must allow pop-ups on the site to see the pop-up.  The page will give you instructions for adding it to your Google calendar.

Q: How do I get or recover my Teacherease password?
A: Go to www.teacherease.com,  Put in your email address and click "Forgot Your Password."  You will get an email with instructions for logging in.  If it says your email is not in the system, please contact the high school office to have them put it in teacherease.

Q: My Chromebook has scratches on the outside of the case. What should I do?
A: We are not concerned about minor scratches on the outside of the devices.  Many have scratches from the initial handling of the devices and will get more with normal usage.  You will not be charged for repairs at the end of the year unless it has serious gouges or chips.

Q: My asset tag fell off my bag. What should I do?
A: Please bring it to the helpdesk to re-attach it immediately.  If you lose the tag you will haev to be charged $5 for a new replacement.

Q: How do I install Chrome Apps for Extensions?
Please take the time to explore some of the available apps and extensions which could be very helpful to you.  If you think an App would be useful that is not listed here, please tell your teachers about it and they can make a request to have the app added to your device.

Q: Why can't I use Google Talk / Hangouts / Plus?
A: There are many features that are currently disabled for students and you should receive notification that they are disabled if you attempt to use them.  We do not currently have any policies in place for the features that are currently disabled.  However, this could change at any time, so stay tuned!

Q: How do I clean the LCD screen?
A: Turn off the Chromebook.  Lightly dampen a clean, soft, lint-free cloth with water only.  Wipe the screen, but be careful not to apply too much pressure on any one spot.  Do NOT spray liquid directly on the screen.

Q: Can I plug external USB devices such as mice into my Chromebook?
A: Not all devices will be supported, but feel free to use USB mice on your Chromebook at home.  You may be a mouse to use at school, but it's not be stored in the pouch through out the day.  We highly recommend you leave these devices at home as they could be lost or stolen at school.

Q: How can I quickly take notes?
A: Google Keep and Quick Note are other alternatives available on your Chromebook.  Google Keep syncs with your Google account automatically.

If you choose to use Quick Note, bring up Quick Note on your Chromebook.  Then click on Settings in the bottom right.  Next click on Sign In with your Google Account.  This will allow your notes to sync to Quick Notes cloud.  If you open Quick note on any computer and login with your Google Account you will have access to them.

If you still have issues, please come to the HelpDesk for assistance.
