May 7, 2012

Dear Parents,

Eight grade students will be taking the Science Maine Educational Assessment on Thursday and Friday, May 10 and 11 this week.

This Wednesday, May 9 is an early release day.  Dismissal time is approximately 11:15 (possibly a few minutes later depending on buses).  This half day is Wellness Day for all of our students and staff. Wellness Day is an opportunity for students and staff to take the time to explore various activities that keep us well in mind, body and spirit.  Some activities are quiet and reflective, some are active and physical and some are social and easy.  Whatever activities students are assigned, we hope they embrace the opportunity to learn something new or enjoy something they may not get the chance to do often.  Enjoy taking the day off from our usual routines and please encourage students to enjoy the day and make the most of it.

Please also remind students to wear comfortable clothes for outdoor and indoor activities, appropriate shoes (NO FLIP FLOPS please) and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day and don't forget to bring sunscreen or apply before coming to school that day.  Of course, dress code is still in effect for this day.

Congratulations to Izzy Goldberg, grade 7, who is the winner of the Clynk mascot design contest! -

8th Grade Parents:
The week beginning June 11, 2012 Approximately 130 - 8th grade students will be participating in Discovery Week. The 8th grade Discovery Week will have a strong service component. Part of the service component will include 8th grade students giving their time and energy and non profits and social service agencies throughout greater Portland on Tuesday morning, June 12 from approximately 9 am – 12 noon.

Last year 8th grade students served at 20 + nonprofits and agencies including Ronald McDonald House, Riding to the Top, Portland Trails,  Partners for World Health, Falmouth Memorial Library, and Preble Street Resource Center.

While we will be working closely with the transportation dept. to arrange for buses to transport many of the students to their service experiences, we will also need quite a number of parent volunteers to drive students to agencies and chaperon while there. We will most likely need between 15-25 volunteers on June 12. Parents interested in chaperoning on June 12th can contact me directly at

The feedback from the last three year’s parent volunteers was that they really enjoyed the experience.

The Falmouth Music Parents Association is closing out its 2nd year.  We have seen two very exciting years of organization and planning!   As evidenced by the amazing concerts we have all experienced in the last month, the music program continues to thrive!  The FMPA board members and parents have many exciting ideas for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year and we would love to get all parents involved.  It takes all of us to continue to foster and support the excellent music program Falmouth is known for.
We are having our elections for the 2012-2013 school year on Thursday, May 14, 2012.   We will be taking nominations through Monday, May 14th and will offer a floor nomination process as well.   The following positions need to be filled:  President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, 5 board members, middle school representative, and high school representative.   There are 5 meetings per year (September, November, January, March, May).   Parent involvement is crucial to our success and the continued success of the music department in the Falmouth School System.
If you are interested in nominating yourself or know someone you would like to nominate, please send a simple nomination email  If you are running for a position, please make sure you are in attendance on Monday, May 14.  IF you are nominating someone else, please confirm with them before sending in the nomination that they are accepting of the nomination and let them know they will need to be at the meeting on the 14th.
Thank you all for your support of our children and the musical excellence in Falmouth!   We hope to see all of you get involved with this worthwhile organization!

The PTO has been focusing on working with teachers a lot this year with grants and in school activities.   We are breaking out this month with several new forum ideas.   We would like to get some community dialogue going among the parents.  We think that the more we can communicate within ourselves, the more we will learn about our children. We have a fantastic group of panelists for the "It takes a Village" forum night - and we planned it around ski night pick up Jan 19 @ 6:30pm.   We hope to get talking at 6:30 and be done in time for any ski parent to head to the gym and pick up their child - brimming with enthusiasm and better understanding of their life!

Please us a note to let us know what you think.  We can always be reached at!
