June 16, 2014 - Summer Edition
The Middle School will be undergoing significant construction again this summer. The new science and music rooms, as well as additional special education rooms will be an appreciated addition to the school facilities. To that end, however, both our phone service and Internet will go down at 4:00 on Friday, June 13. It's still not completely clear how our phone handling will be for the next two weeks! My best advice is to contact us by email. Our secretaries are Joyce Beasley firstname.lastname@example.org and Julie Mercer (student services) at email@example.com. You can always try our phones as well! June 16th is the last full day for our staff. They will be working together planning for next year as well as closing their rooms down for the summer. (Some are completely packing them up!)
A high point of the end of year activities is recognizing particular students for outstanding achievements. The following students are this year's award recipients. A hearty congratulations to all!

Each year 8th graders at FMS take part in the National Spanish Examination. This year 37, 218 students nationwide took this exam in all 50 states. The students here at FMS did an outstanding job. 42 of our students scored in the top 25th percentile nationwide.
Le Grand Concours is a national competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. This is the 79th annual event of this exam. Students were evaluated for their reading and listening comprehension skills in French. Nearly 100,000 students in all 50 states competed in this 2014 event.
Students' grades will be finalized in PowerSchool by June 19th and will be available until JUNE 24 - so please check your children's grades before then and print them if you wish to have a printed copy! Thanks! Please note that 6th grade and UA (Unified Arts) grades are under the "Standards Grades" tab. Also, any time there is blue text, it is hyperlinked to additional information. For example, when looking at 6th grade trimester final grades, one will see a "--". It is hyperlinked and clicking on it reveals the assignments behind the standards based grade. For important information on reading 6th grade and UA report cards online, please use this link: https://docs.google.com/a/falmouthschools.org/View?id=dgvh23br_347gww4kmf4. Seventh and 8th grade grades currently show in "Grades and Attendance" and will show in "Grade History" by the end of the day on the 19th.
Commendation Letters will be mailed out during the week of June 23 along with NWEA scores for the 2013-14 school year.

I'd also like to recognize and thank two exceptionally dedicated teachers who are leaving us this year. Chris Olsen is a 6th grade teacher who is retiring. She is perhaps best known for her work developing the 6th grade science curriculum including the Falmouth Forests and Yardscaping Units. Maggie Pearl is an 8th grade English Language Arts teacher who has worked tirelessly to support our students in both the reading of literature and particularly the writing process! We have also appreciated Michelle Bourget, Janet Bruen, and Karina Magee, all three of whom filled temporary world language teaching positions this year.
We look forward to Gail Turner's return to Spanish teaching after a year in Ecuador. In addition Alexandra (Alex) Hodges will joining the Spanish teaching team. Alex interned at Falmouth High School and came highly recommended. She also served as a tech integrator for two years, so brings those skills to us as well. Sarah Carr is replacing Chris Olsen in the 6th grade. Sarah has taught middle school ELA and science since 1997. Amy Kissell is replacing Maggie Pearl. Amy has taught Middle School and High School ELA since 2008 and before that, taught in both Korea and Nicaragua.
Finally, I want to welcome Dr. Janet Adams as the new Falmouth Middle School Principal. She comes with a wealth of experience in school leadership, and I know you will immediately recognize her warmth, listening skills, and welcoming personality! Her presence and expertise is making it much easier for me to leave.
Again, I want to thank all of you for being so supportive of both your children and Falmouth Middle School. I am retiring and moving to Arizona, but will keep Falmouth students and their families close to my heart! Have a wonderful summer - and best wishes to all of you!
