Identify: How does the Star-Spangled Banner connect with historical events in the War of 1812?
  1. Use the IREAD Poster to annotate all four stanza of the Star-Spangled Banner. Here is an example from the first stanza:

The Star-Spangled Banner

Francis Scott Key, Defence of Fort McHenry, September 17, 1814

O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,

What so proudly we hail’d at the twilight’s [faint light] last gleaming,

Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous [dangerous] fight

O’er the ramparts [fortification] we watch’d were so gallantly [heroically] streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,

O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
