Celebrating Unity Ball (C.U.B.)

Flag of the United States (1891-1896)

Dear Bear Valley Eighth Graders,

Your attendance in costume is required at the most important social event of the season. To celebrate the unity of the United States of America, Bear Valley Middle School is hosting the annual Celebrating Unity Ball. This highly memorable and educational event is a student assessment that blends the physical education dance unit with social studies curriculum related to nineteenth century American culture. Students will attend the C.U.B. hosted by their social studies teacher on these two evenings:

Kodiak Ball

Friday, April 27

6 - 8 p.m.

Bruin Ball

Friday, May 4

6 - 8 p.m.

The C.U.B. requires ladies and gentleman to reenact the formal fashions and etiquette of nineteenth century America. Gentlemen must wear their nicest shoes and trousers, button-up shirts with collars, and any type of necktie. Gentlemen must also tuck their shirts neatly into their trousers. Vests and coats are also appropriate and strongly encouraged. Ladies must wear long dresses or skirts with blouses. Costume rentals are not required, but rental information is posted on cub.learnee.com for parents interested in this option. Students may also rent dresses for ten dollars or vests with jackets for five dollars from the physical education department. Students will earn history grades based on their attendance in costume and physical education grades based on their participation at the C.U.B.

Students need to check in with a teacher at the bottom of the MPR ramp at 5:30 p.m. and begin lining up for the Grand March. Parents and relatives should also arrive around this time to take photographs, record videos, and observe the Grand March. After the first dance, parents are kindly asked to leave and return at 8:00 p.m. to pick up their children. Light refreshments of lemonade, water, and cookies are provided to students during their only break. Mr. Rodriguez will be available to take 4x6 photo booth prints at the cost of three dollars from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the MPR.

We are in need of parent and student volunteers to help decorate the MPR, set up and serve refreshments, and help with clean up immediately following the C.U.B. Volunteers are welcome to attend the C.U.B. for the entire evening.

Fill out and return the bottom of this form to your social studies teacher by Tuesday, April 3.

Dear Parents,

Bear Valley Middle School eighth grade staff and students thank you in advance for volunteering your time to help out with both C.U.B.sPlease look at the picture collage attachment with this email to review the 2010 setup. Parents receiving this email have volunteered to help out as Decorators, Servers, and Cleaners. These descriptions will better help parents assist in decorating the MPR Thursday and at the CUB on Friday evening.

Decorators (Thursday, the day before the first C.U.B., from 2-4 p.m.)
  • Borrow the artificial plants in the front office and use these as decorations on the stage and around other places in the MPR.
  • History teachers will organize the refreshments in preparation for the Friday ball.
  • All 8th grade teachers will work with parents and students to decorate the MPR on the Thursday before the first C.U.B. at 2:00 p.m.
  • Review the 2010 CUB collage to get a better idea how to decorate the MRP.
  • Staff, parents, and students will take the decorations and tools located in the MPR and decorate the walls, stage, and doorways.
Servers (5-8 p.m.)
  • Set up up the refreshment tables from 5 to 6 on Friday evening.
  • Serve refreshments around 6:45 p.m. on Friday evening.
  • Each C.U.B. will have approximately 190 students in attendance.
  • Cover the tables with tablecloths and organize napkins, cookies, water, and lemonade.
  • Teachers will help prepare the lemonade. Mix the iced lemonade concentrate with water into both five gallon beverage dispensers.
  • Place the 16 packages of Costco chocolate chunk cookies on the three blue and three gold platters. Please keep the plastic containers for cookie storage if cookies are left over.
  • Servers can begin filling cups with lemonade around 6:30 in the evening. Servers can also fill around 25-30 cups with Lake Arrowhead water because most students will usually drink lemonade.
  • Each student may have two cookies, a napkin, and a glass of lemonade or water at the one fifteen-minute break that takes place around 6:45 p.m.
  • Please ask students to refill their cup with lemonade or water during the break to save cups.
  • Students must remain in the eating area during their break. One parent can help supervise the bathroom hall and direct students back to the refreshment area.
  • Empty the extra lemonade into the remaining cups so students can finish it at the conclusion of the ball.
  • Empty the tap water into the beverage dispensers to help clean out the lemonade residue.
  • Please remove all cookies from the platters and place them back into Costco containers. Students can have extra cookies as they leave the ball at 8 p.m.
Cleaners (8-8:30 p.m.)
  • Clean up the MPR and put away materials when the C.U.B. ends at 8 o'clock in the evening.
  • Help place the artificial plants behind the curtains on the MPR stage.
  • Carefully remove banners and wall decorations and pack these items into containers if parents are cleaning up after the Second C.U.B.
  • Put away all extra tableware goods, trays, and beverage dispensers.
  • Throw away trash on all lunch tables and within the MPR.
With Great Gratitude for your Help,
