The reading program provides reading instruction that will help students achieve success in their humanities classes. Students will be required to acquire and apply reading and writing strategies to construct knowledge. The Freshman Reading course will focus on helping students fine-tune their general literacy skills as well as content-specific (Social Studies and English) literacy skills. Depending on the types of texts they are reading in their humanities courses, (textbooks, novels, short stories, web-based documents, newspapers, etc.), the students will learn how to select and vary their reading strategies in order to locate specific information, connect ideas, determine a point of view, monitor comprehension, identify question-answer relationships, synthesize information, draw inferences, ask questions, etc.
