27J Board of Education approves extension

of Eagle Ridge Academy charter

Brighton, Jan. 22, 2012 – The School District 27J Board of Education unanimously approved a one-year extension of the charter for Eagle Ridge Academy at its regular board meeting tonight.

As part of the district charter renewal process, Eagle Ridge Academy was required to submit a renewal application, by Dec. 1, 2012, using the district's Request for Proposals procedure. A capacity interview of school leaders and charter school governing board members then took place along with a written response to questions generated after review of the renewal application and a district site review.

Several criteria were cited in the recommendation to the board to extend Eagle Ridge’s charter. Among them were confidence in the leadership of first year Head of School Ben Ploeger and his quick and systematic approach to solving school operational and financial problems. The guidance of ERA board members Rod Blunck, retired School District 27J Superintendent, and Cathy Pellish, Dean of Instruction at Front Range Community College, were also noted as positive factors in working to build an effective governance structure to support the school’s leadership.

Eagle Ridge Academy was originally chartered in 2010 and granted a three-year charter, which was scheduled to expire June 30, 2013. The board’s approval of the charter extension opens a statutory 75-day window where 27J and Eagle Ridge Academy will negotiate the terms of a new contract. The contract is expected to come before the 27J Board of Education for consideration this spring.
