Alberta Education Student Language Development Exchange Program - How does it work?

This program provides students with the opportunity to improve their second language skills through linguistic and cultural immersion. Participants in this exchange alternate between hosting a partner from another culture in their home and school, and traveling to live with their partner and study at their partner's school. Depending on the exchange destination, the exchange periods can vary between 4 to 6 months, with the time divided equally between each exchange location. An important part of this exchange is that the paired students live in the same location at the same time. Click here to investigate further.

YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange

A national, non-profit program offering opportunities for youth to improve their second official language skills (French or English) while exploring another part of Canada. The YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange (SWSE), which is funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage, is a 6-week summer program for 16- and 17-year-old youth.

Those hired as Pages work on a part-time basis during their first year of study at one of the universities in the National Capital Region.

Application forms and additional information will be available online and will be sent to high school or CEGEP guidance counsellors in October. Click here to see more on the Page Program

In this reciprocal home-stay exchange, youth and their families are paired with a participant from another province, and are hosted in each other's homes to deepen their cultural and language experience through immersion. Alongside the opportunity to develop second official language kills, exchanged youth are also provided summer jobs in the non-profit or public sector of the local community in which they are being hosted. This aspect of the program gives invaluable work experience otherwise difficult to achieve for this age group - as well as a more practical application of their second language.

House of Commons Page Program

Each year, 40 students are selected from high schools and CEGEPs across Canada to come to Ottawa and work as Pages in the House of Commons. Pages have the opportunity to learn about the House of Commons while witnessing the legislative process first hand.

Wilvaken offers campers a unique opportunity for practice in both of Canada's official languages, English and French. Most of our staff are fluently bilingual, as are many campers. All of the staff are more than willing to make the effort to speak in either language. We are not primarily a "language school" - we simply function in both languages.Wilvaken is not an immersion camp as this is a program that places someone in an environment away from what they are normally used to. There are camps that are immersion and they take a group of children who all speak the same language and enforce the use of the other language various ways. For some children that works well but Wilvaken is a traditional outdoor camp first and became bilingual due to a need in the province of Quebec. We have been offiicially bilingual since 1987 and are proud of the achievements since it was first introduced. We do have on staff a language instructor, who works specifically with those who have a particular interest in improving their English or French. All our staff participate in encouraging campers to learn to communicate in both languages. With our approach, the use of both languages is simply the norm at camp. The learning process is natural, without pressure - and fun. Of course, those who are most open to learning, and willing to make a certain effort, are those who profit most by this opportunity. Many youngsters have become quite fluent in a second language when their only opportunity for practice has been their summers at camp. Usually these are youngsters who stay for a month, and come for more than one summer.
