  • The Institute for Innovation in Second Language Education (IISLE) at Edmonton Public Schools is one of a kind in North America: a center for excellence for languages operating within a public school district. 

  • IISLE maintains the largest second languages consultant staff of any school district in Canada.

  • Edmonton Public Schools, supported through IISLE, offers the most diverse second language programming in Canada, offering 12 languages in various formats during the regular school day. These programs include a large French Immersion program, six bilingual programs (Arabic, American Sign Language, Chinese, German, Hebrew, Spanish) and second language programs for 11 languages (Arabic, American Sign Language, Chinese, Cree, ESL, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Punjabi and Spanish).

  • IISLE collaborates with key partner institutes, such as the Confucius Institute in Edmonton, the Goethe-Institut, Alliance Francaise and Instituto Cervantes.

  • A partnership between Edmonton Public Schools, Shandong Province and Communications University of China has been signed and is being implemented.

  • IISLE is the first Associated Centre of Instituto Cervantes in North America and the only one housed within a public school district.

  • An official Spanish Resource Centre has been established at IISLE through a Memorandum of Agreement between the Ministry of Education of Spain, the University of Alberta and IISLE at Edmonton Public Schools.

  • Many foreign governments have approved Edmonton Public Schools to be an official site for the delivery of international language examinations. IISLE currently offers:

    • HSK, YCT and BCT testing for Chinese language; Edmonton Public Schools received an award from the Government of China (Hanban) recognizing it as the best centre for Chinese language testing outside of China;
    • DELF and DALF Testing Centre (for French language certification, awarded by the Government of France);
    • DELE Testing Center (for Spanish language certification awarded by the Instituto Cervantes);
    • Facilitation of German language testing that is provided by the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad (ZFA)
  • IISLE at Edmonton Public Schools has formally partnered with Goethe-Institut and the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad (ZfA) to support German language education.

  • IISLE is a national leader in second language assessment. Edmonton Public Schools is the first school district in Canada to pilot the Common European Framework of Reference and the European Language Portfolio, and is the official Canadian representative to the European Centre for Modern Languages Project, "European Language Portfolios in While School Implementation". IISLE provides consultant support and sessions on these topics to leaders and institutions across Canada.

  • A landmark agreement for collaboration between Edmonton Public Schools and the Academie Rouen in France has been implemented.

  • A formal partnership between IISLE and the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT) has been signed and implemented.

  • A Memorandum of Understanding between Edmonton Public Schools and the Académie of Grenoble has been signed and is being implemented.

  • A Memorandum of Understanding between Edmonton Public Schools and the Qatar Foundation International has been signed and implemented.

  • An agreement on the "DELF For Schools" Canada was signed between Edmonton Public Schools and the Cultural Service of the French Embassy.
