Monthly Lunch & Learns

Monthly Central Lunch and Learns are an opportunity for District staff to learn about First Nations, Métis and Inuit education and culture. Lunch and Learns are from noon to 12:45 pm and are located in the Centre for Education. Watch the bulletin board for dates and room numbers.

Land-Based Well-Being:  The Blanket Exercise
Bring your lunch and meet members of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Education unit and participate in the Blanket Exercise.  Participants will engage in a highly interactive process that builds understanding of how the history of treaty making and colonization of Canada impacted Indigenous peoples throughout the years and continues to impact them today.  Come join this memorable experience.  

Land-Based Well-Being:  Beaded Lanyard
Bring your lunch and meet members of the First Nations, Métis, & Inuit Education Unit and participate in a cultural arts based activity.  Participants will learn the bead wrapping technique and have an introduction to the history of designs and colours for First Nation people.  This is a two part session at no cost to participants.  Participation limit:  25. 

Introduction to Cree Language 
Introduction to Cree Language: In this Lunch & Learn session, participants will be introduced to the principle of wâhkôtowin and the importance of relationships. Participants will learn how to relate to their family members in the Cree language.

Introduction to Culture
Bring your lunch, meet members of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education unit and engage in a discussion about the core elements of culture.  Participants will learn about the six pillars of culture that are the most common categories among all cultures, how aspects of culture can be similar and different and be able to identify where their identity fits within the culture tree.  Each participant will add their identity leaves to each branch of the tree.  

Land-Based Well-Being: Traditional First Nations Games
Bring your lunch, meet members of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education unit and participate in traditional First Nations games. Participants will learn and experience simple traditional First Nations games designed to increase physical activity for all ages and skill levels. Don't forget to bring your lunch and wear comfortable clothing!

Land-Based Well-Being: Métis Storytelling and Finger Weaving
Bring your lunch, meet members of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education unit and participate in a cultural arts-based activity featuring Métis storytelling and finger weaving. In this 45-minute interactive experience, you will participate in a Métis jig and create a finger woven Métis sash.

Land-Based Well-Being: Traditional Foods
Bring your lunch, meet members of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education unit and participate in creating your own pemmican.  All participants will learn about traditional foods and will be making their own version of pemmican to take home. 

Land-Based Well-Being: Traditional Dance
Bring your lunch, meet members of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education unit and experience a powwow dance demonstration. Participants will learn a few dance steps too. Don't forget to wear comfortable clothing!

Tipi Raising
Bring your lunch and meet members of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Education unit and participate in learning the structure of the tipi.  The poles also teach us that no matter what version of the Great Spirit we believe in, we still go to the same Creator from those many directions and belief systems; we just have different journeys to get there.
