Epidural Steroid Injection; ESI; Radiculopathy; Herniated Disc

What is Epidural space?

Epidural space is a potential space within the spinal canal. It surrounds the outermost covering of the spinal cord (dura mater). It contains nerve roots, blood vessels & fatty tissue.
What is Epidural Steroid Injection?

Epidural Steroid Injection is a technique for relieving pain from spinal stenosis and spinal disc herniation. A relatively small amounts of corticosteroids together with a local anesthetic are injected into the epidural space around the spinal cord and spinal nerves. The anti-inflammatory effects of the corticosteroid is responsible for providing pain relief.

Who needs an Epidural Steroid Injection ?
Epidural Steroid Injections help patients with disc herniations, disc bulges, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis and sciaticaIt is considered to be an integral part of nonsurgical management of radicular pain from spinal disorders.

What are the risk and the complications?

It is generally a safe procedure. But as with any interventional procedure, it carries a small risk of potential complications such as bleeding, infection, leaking spinal fluid & injury to blood vessels or nerves in and around the spine.
