November News

November is going to be a short month! We will be dismissing early on Friday, November 9th @ 12:30. I will be gone on November 14th-16th due to family reasons. We also have Thanksgiving Break on Wednesday, November 21st- Friday, November 23rd. 

We have moved on to comparing fiction and non-fiction text on the same topic. Students are reading books with a partner and comparing the two texts. We will also work on text features in Non-fiction text. students will examine a variety of non-fiction text and learn how to use photographs/captions, headings, table of contents, index , glossary and diagram. 

We will have sorts both weeks of November 5th and 12th. No sort on the Week of thanksgiving. We will continue sorts after break.  Don't forget to have your child practice at home.

I am so proud of the students completing their opinion writings on the best pet. Our next writing project will focus on narrative. 

Students have been working on evens and odds and showing what makes it even and odd. They are also working in their groups on their fact strategies. During the second quarter, we will be working a lot on numbers in Base Ten operations. learning the value of each number, how to represent it and expand it. Students are also doing a lot of comparison of numbers (both 2 and 3 digit). As we continue our math journals, we will begin to work with the change of the unknown. This means the unknown is no longer the sum or difference. It may be the second number of the equation. 

Social studies:
Election day is this month! The students will be learning about voting and elections. In addition, we will be learning about Pilgrim boys and girls. 

We are wrapping up spiders and matter. We will begin  Engineering design as our next topic.

October is a busy month! We have a lot of shortened weeks. No school on October 5th and 8th. Early Dismissal is on Thursday, October 18th and No school on Friday, October 19th due to Parent Teacher conferences. 

  • Please send in snack with your child daily or enough for the whole week. We have plenty of storage in our desks. 
  • Dress your child appropriately for the weather. If you would like to keep an extra hoodie sweatshirt here, it is allowed. 
We will continue to work in our guided reading groups at the students reading level. We are focusing on the comprehension skill Beginning, Middle and end. 

Words Their Way (WTW):
The students will be assessed on their sort on Friday, October 12th. The following sort will be for two weeks as well. That assessment will take place on October 26th. 

Students are problem solving using strategies that best fit them. For example: using tools such as base ten blocks, number line or ten frames. Some students prefer to show their work using Mental Math. We are also working in groups based on our fact abilities and using strategies to understand how an answer can be found.

Students are working on an opinion writing and what is the Best Pet for them. They will support their opinion by giving reasons written in a paragraph form.  Prior to writing, students will use graphic organizers, meet in small groups and plan their thinking. After beginning their writing, they will edit, revise and publish a final copy. 

Social Studies:
We will continue to learn about why and how responsibilities and rights are important to citizens. The students are learning that they are 3 branches of government (community, state and Nation). 

Matter chatter is still happening in Second grade! We will begin our science experiments very soon! The students will encounter hands on experiences with science.  We will also begin a spider unit that will take place over the last week of October and will correlate into our reading as well. 

Week of 9-24-18

We are so happy that it finally feels like fall! It was a rough week last week with the heat. It will be nice to look forward to cooler temps in the classroom.

This week, we are beginning our Daily Five stations.  During these stations, the students will be reading to self, working on writing, completing word work activities with their WTW cards and meeting with the teacher to work on reading at their level. In addition to Daily Five stations, the students are finishing up their Potato Chip Champ project on why Kindness counts. They have been working with a partner to choose four character traits that best describe their character and find evidence to support it. 
Students are working in math stations while I meet with students indvidually to assess their math facts. IN the stations, they are working on math journals, show what you Know (number of the day) and math games. They have been independently working on the Power of Ten by playing a card game to find the combinations of making ten.
Words their way has begun! Today was our first day using our individual lists in stations with a variety of activities. Hopefully your child can share some of the ideas to practice their words at home. A set of cards are coming home today!
WE will begin to learn about the States of Matter. Fun experiments will be involved!
Social Studies:
We will be discussing our community government and their jobs. 

Week of 9-10-18

Yeah for regular schedule! We are starting to get into our normal routine with the exception of MAP testing. A few reminders, please dress your child appropriately according to the weather. Layers are good for when it's still chilly in the morning, but the school still heats up in the afternoon. No Flip Flops or slide sandals. This can be a hazard to students when playing. 

We have a featured author this month! Students are exploring books by the author Tedd Arnold. In addition, we are continuing to build stamina for Read to Self so we can begin our stations very soon. 
Words Their Way:
Students are learning how to sort words and complete activities in class. Currently we are not being assessed on the words. Stay tuned for more information! 
Students are exploring numbers and the numerous way to show them through standard, word, model and expanded form. we have also begun our math journals. This will allow students to show their way of thinking. 

Weeks of August 20th & 27th

Welcome back to school! We are off to a great start. Over the next two weeks, we will be doing a lot of review of expectations, responsibilities and procedures. The class has been reading a lot of mentor text to help support these. We will continue to learn about what makes a good citizen reading a variety of books that teach us the important traits to become a good citizen. In addition, we will be working on what reading strategies help us with problem solving unknown words. In math, we are beginning to learn what makes a mathematician and why is it important. 

Just a few reminders: Please send in individual snacks with your child starting on Monday 8/27/18. They may bring a whole weeks worth or daily. Water bottles are allowed all year. Also, please do not send your child to school in flip flops or slides. Shoes or sandals must have straps for safety reasons.

Week of 5-14

This week, we will begin our ten day countdown to the end of the school year. At the end of each day, the students will scan a QR code to see what fun activity is planned for the following day. 

Our class has returned all of their library books! Way to go!

The second graders will be visiting Bolin on Wednesday. 

Fun Day is on Friday, May 18th. Don't forget to wear your class tshirt! Early Dismissal will be at 12:30. 

Week of May 7th

Hooray! We are officially done with Spelling Quizzes. The students will be working on Word Work throughout the last few weeks in Class. 
Most of our time over the next few weeks will be spent on projects and assessments. I will not be sending home a reading log or math calendar for math. This is time of year that I know things get busy at home. Enjoy your nights with your kiddos! I know I am!
We are looking forward to summer!

  • It is Parent Visiting Week. If you plan to visit your child's classroom, please make sure you turn in the slip or call the office to let Mrs. Davidson know.  
  • Laps for Life Money is due this week. The students ran laps around the baseball diamond on Monday. 
reading News:
The students are reading fables and working on Reader's Theater. One of the biggest things we have been working on is using text to answer questions or locate information. Please make sure your child is not only reading accurately, but also comprehending. 
Math News:
We are wrapping up Partitioning rectangles, 3D shapes and their attributes and Arrays.
Spelling News:
We will have two more weeks of spelling lists being sent home and quizzes on Fridays. After May 4th, we will only work in class on our word work. 

Week of 4-16-18

Reminders: We will have our Spring Sing at the Peoria Courthouse this Wednesday, April 18th, weather permitting. If it is raining, we will be inside the Fondulac Library. Please make sure your child is dressed according to the weather. Popcorn Day is this Friday! Don't forget to collect donations for Laps for Life. All money will need to be turned into the office by Monday, April 23rd. 

Reading News:
The students are currently working on their All about Me Text Feature projects. Once we finish those, we will begin to read Fables and Folktales.
Math News: 
The students are learning about Polygon attributes (sides, vertices, and angles). We are also learning how to partition rectangle into columns and rows. Some new math games are being sent home this week.
Spelling News:
This week's spelling pattern -aw, augh, and -ough is a little tricky. Don't forget to practice! The final quiz is on Friday, April 20th.
Science News:
We have moved onto Earth changes in science. Earth Day is this weekend!

Welcome back from Spring break! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and was able to rest up! It is hard to believe that we are winding down in second grade. We have less than 40 days left. A few dates to remember: April 12th- Family Night/Carnival, April 18th- Spring Sing at the Peoria Courthouse, April 26th-Second Grade Game Night.
Reading news:
We are wrapping up our Jane Goodall biographies in our reading groups. We have also read a variety of text about her. 
Spelling News:
Our Final quiz will be Friday, April 6th over the short e pattern -ea.
Math News: 
We are finishing up Telling time. Students are currently working on telling time to the nearest five minutes.
