Hippopotamus (カバ)

When ancient Greeks (古代ギリシャ人) visited Africa for the first time they saw a large, barrel (バレル) shaped animal and they gave it a name. Hippopotamus is a combination of the Greek words hippos, meaning "horse" and potamos, meaning "river."

Adult hippos average (平均) 1,500 kg for males and 1,300 kg for females. Even though they are stocky (ずんぐりした) with short legs, a hippo can run 30 km/h over short distances.

Hippopotamuses are aggressive (侵略的な) animals. They are the deadliest (一番命取りの) mammal (哺乳類) in Africa and according to the webpage "African Overland Tours.com" they kill around 3000 people a year!
