Description:

Teams of students work to design, build, demonstrate, and document engineering projects.

Students give regular progress reports throughout the quarter and contribute to the final project report. 

1-2 hours of discussion, 8-10 hours of laboratory.

Prerequisites:  Completion of all of the breadth courses and one depth course.

Grading Policy:

Each team will be assigned a team grade for the overall accomplishments, effort, and creativity of the design and implementation of the project, as judged through the presentations, design review, and the midterm and final reports.

This grade may be adjusted up or down based on the quality of the reports (comprehensiveness, English correctness) and based on the team aspects of public speaking (correct slide design, organization).

Additionally, each student's grade can be adjusted individually up or down from the team grade based on a combination of the mentor's individual evaluation, peer evaluation, and participation.  


Schedule:

  • Each student is expected to spend at least 10 hours per week on this course, most of which is spent directly working on the project (there's not too much in-class time).

  • Contact the mentor on Monday, January 7 after your group project is assigned.

  • Establish the Statement of Work and present it in week 2 

  • Give a team presentation about 5 times per quarter using PowerPoint (send a copy of the presentation to the TA, who will post it on the web)

  • Wednesday, February 6: Turn in midterm written report (1 per team) electronically to the instructors and the TA, and confidential midterm peer evaluation form (1 per person) electronically to the TA only.  The instructions for the midterm written report are below.

  • Design Review in weeks 5 and 6 (about 25 minute review for each team). The design review is just for the team, no the mentor. On Feb 8, Team B will be 2 to 2:25 and team C will be 2:25 to 2:50. On Feb 11, Team A will be 2 to 2:25 and team D will be 2:25 to 2:50. On Feb 13, Team E will be 2 to 2:25.

  • Rehearsal for the final presentation in week 10  (March 11 to 15)

  • Final presentations will be held on Monday, March 18 from 3 to 6 pm.

  • By Thursday March 21 at noon everything must be turned in: peer evaluation form (electronic to TA), software deliverables to the sponsor (cc TA), final report (electronic to the instructor, sponsor, and TA plus one hard copy to the administrative assistant), hardware deliverables (turned over to the instructor or the sponsor). 



  • Week 1 blue color means the faculty are presenting; students must attend class in week 1.
    After week 1, student teams do the presentations. The red color is for when all students must attend class, whether their team is presenting or not. For the design reviews: only come to the one session when your team is presenting. For the purple progress updates: you can miss one of those sessions (you can miss it only if your team is not presenting).
