Biblical foundations for MSTs

Missionary support teams (MSTs) are an integral part of EMM’s Biblical mandate to go and make disciples of all nations, expressed below in our mission vision statement:

Christ's transforming love compels us to
     cross cultures
     engage the world
     and make disciples of Jesus

Together with EMM, MSTs send workers to the nations. Missionaries are called to go, but they can’t go and preach unless we together send them (Romans 8:10)!

Both missionary and mission agency count on your “partnership in the gospel” (Philippians 1:5) to:
  • Mobilize spiritual, relational, and financial support for the missionary
  • Refresh those in the sending community with the good news of what God is doing in, through, and around the missionary.

What does the Bible say?

Study the scriptures together as an MST to help ground you in the Biblical basis for serving on an MST. The following ideas for Bible study are adapted from the book Serving as Senders by Neal Pirolo. This book is available to borrow or purchase from EMM’s Human Resources department.
  • The apostle Paul shared his need for a support team. What kind of support was he requesting in each of the following passages?
    • Ephesians 6: 18-19
    • Acts 21:12-13
    • II Timothy 4:13
    • Romans 16
    • Acts 14:26-28
    • Philippians 4:10-12
  • Read Romans 10:13-15. Do senders share equal responsibility and blessing as those who go?
  • Did Jesus have a missionary support team? Read and discuss Luke 8.
