My research focuses on the social and spatial effects of the internet. I am particularly interested in gendered divisions of user-generated geographic data (from geotags to OpenStreetMap) and the impacts of male dominance on spatial data repositories.
Through understanding divisions and exclusion in digital content production and consumption from the household level to the global scale the imbalances in Web 2.0 are increasingly visible. Along the same lines, I am looking at the interchange between social and physical spaces to understand the simultaneous broadening social divide and bridging of Cartesian distance in cyberspace through Twitter.
In July 2012, I will be leaving the University of Kentucky for a position at Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA.
