The Ellenroad Great Steam Experience

Not to be missed!

This is a chance to relive a day in the great era of steam power

The Ellenroad Steam Museum Society is offering you the chance to be involved and have a hands on experience with this unique steam driven machinery. You will have the opportunity to run each of the great engines that we operate at Ellenroad Steam Museum.

  • Be on site approximately 6.00am, the days work ends at 4.00pm.
  • Wear suitable protective clothes and suitable footwear. We will provide working gloves and hard hat.
  • Light refreshments will be provided and will include sandwiches, pies, cake etc.

The day will start ideally at 6.00am (if you want to take part in the lighting up of the boiler). The Lancashire Boiler is coal fed by mechanical stokers. its hoppers however still need to be filled with coal by shovels. Each hopper requires around a ton of coal per steaming. Water control and management of the treatment chemicals are also part of the boiler man’s work.

During the time it takes to raise steam pressure, there will be an introduction to the site, machinery, history, what we hope to achieve in the future and what the steam experience day has in store. There will be a tour of the new 1910 workshop.

The first engine you will meet will be the newly restored 1907, 100hp single cylinder horizontal engine built by Marsden’s of Heckmondwike.

Our most historic engine is the Whitelees Beam Engine built by John Petrie in 1841. This engine has just undergone a major rebuild.

The climax of your day will be to take part as a member of the team who start and run the fantastic and breathtakingly powerful 3000HP Ellenroad Twin Tandem Compound Engine. The world's largest working steam mill engine.

The cost of this unique, never to be forgotten experience is £100.00 per person and will include one years free Membership of “The Ellenroad Steam Museum Society”. Membership entitles you to free entry to all our events during the year.

The maximum number of participants will be 3 on any steaming day. The Steam Museum Society reserves the right to cancel or postpone the event. All successful applicants will of course be notified in good time.

Your Chance to take part in this great experience comes on selected public steaming days don’t miss your chance.
