Lesson 10: Designing Challenge

Challenge keeps the players motivated and engaged and can be created in various ways within Gamestar Mechanic, including through the types of sprites used, the qualities of the game space, the complexity of win conditions, the number of levels, and so on. Lessons such as “Level Design,” “Smart Selection of Sprites,” “Narrative, Challenge and Game Space,” “Using Damage Blocks,” “Designing with Enemy Generators,” and “Understanding Doors and Keys” allow students to explore the design of challenge within their games.

There can be varying levels of challenge in a game.

A game is balanced when it is easy to play but difficult to win.
