Lesson 9: Goal Creation and System Sprites

One of the first lessons learned by any aspiring game designer is the powerful role goals play in defining the play of a game. Goals can be simple or complex and must be clearly communicated to a player.

In the following lessons, “What is a Goal?” “Creating Simple Goals,” “Multiple Goals and the Design of Space,” “Goal Combos,” Short-term Goals,” and “Goals, Challenge and the Play Experience,” these ideas are explored.

Big Ideas

Goals define how a game is won or lost.

Goals may be simple or complex.

Players may have goals that are different than that defined by the game.
