Lesson 6: Rules

Designing rules in Gamestar Mechanic takes the form of choosing which sprites are part of a game. Players then modify various parameters of each sprite to create relationships between the sprites. In the following five lessons, “What are Rules?” “Rule Writing and Game Labels,” “Rule-based Design,” “Game Descriptions,” and “Structural Rules and Sprite Behavior,” students practice designing rules as a way of understanding how rules work to create an experience of play.

Big Ideas

Rules describe how to play a game.

Rules also create the play experience of the game.

Rules constrain what a player can and cannot do in a game.
