PACK Homeroom & Humanities Enrichment

"PACK" is a homeroom class with a Humanities enrichment focus.  The class meets for the first 30 minutes of each school day except for Wednesdays because of the late start.  All students in this Pack have demonstrated at least a basic level of proficiency in Reading and Mathematics on the Smarter Balanced Assessment, & will be provided opportunities to practice & enrich the skills they already possess.  All work will be completed during the Pack class period, with no homework assigned.  The focus of Mr. Gernon's PACK is on Project-based Art History.  Students will create art projects based on their study of particular periods and styles in the history of art, particularly from ancient times.

Some of the Homeroom Activities to be carried out in PACK:

  • Morning assemblies
  • ASB activities:  Competition for the ASB sponsored fundraisers
  • Community-building & Team-building activities
  • Emergency evacuation procedures—fire, earthquake & lockdown drills

Grading Policy & Progress Reports: PACK is graded as a Pass/Fail class based on attendance, effort & participation.  You & your family will be able to keep track of your progress in all of your classes through the Power School website.  If you do not already have on-line access to this site, please stop by the school’s main office to learn how to sign up.

Contacting me:  I look forward to assisting you in making this a successful & fun year in PACK for your son or daughter.  If you have any comments, questions or concerns, please contact me by phone:  my school number is (253) 530-4162 or by email:  gernons@psd401.net

Beginning Art

This class is an introduction to the Elements of Art & the Principles of Design.  Students learn about these various concepts, and then apply their understanding by creating projects that exhibit one or more of the Elements and Principles.  During this class, students will use a variety of art media and materials, possibly including drawing, ceramic hand-building, acrylic plastic sculpture, color-mixing, positive & negative space designs, line designs, paper sculpture, and as many more ideas and projects as we can smash into one trimester of the school year.

There is a $25.00 fee for this class to cover the cost of materials.

The various art media & materials are purchased by the school.  Students will probably only need to bring a pencil to class.

Intermediate Art

In this class, students will continue their exploration and development in the Elements of Art & the Principles of Design.  Students learn about the various concepts, and then apply their understanding by creating assignments and projects that exhibit one or more of the Elements and Principles.  During this class, students will typically use a variety of art materials, including drawing in a sketch book, ceramic hand-building and working on the pottery wheel, block printmaking, paper designs, colored pencils, markers, and more.

There is a $25.00 fee for this class to cover the cost of materials.

The various art media & materials are purchased by the school.  Students will probably only need to bring a pencil to class.

Pottery

During the trimester of Pottery, students will be very busy creating many hands on project assignments.  We begin the class by focusing on the idea of positive and negative space through carving stamps out of clay.  These stamps will be used later on to create 1 or more tiles.  Right away, students are introduced to, and with assistance from the instructor, start working on the pottery wheel.  All students should have at least 2 opportunities on the pottery wheel during the trimester, as there are only 4 pottery wheels.  Some students might get 3, 4 or more chances to work on the wheel, depending on how efficient they are in hand-building their other projects.  After carving stamps, we will learn pinch technique, coil technique, slab technique and various methods of glazing or decorating pottery.

There is a $25.00 fee for this class to cover the cost of materials.

The clay and glazes are purchased by the school with the students' fees.  Students will probably only need to bring a pencil to class.

6th Grade Art Rotation
One of the 6th graders options for their year-long elective is "Rotation."  Typically, Art is one of the classes that is included in this rotation. Other classes in the rotation this year are a trimester of Leadership with Mrs. Hollett, and a trimester of an Introduction to Industrial Arts with Mr. Bolender.
The Art portion of the 6th grade Rotation is an an introduction to the Elements of Art & the Principles of Design.  Students learn about these various concepts, and then apply their understanding by creating projects that exhibit one or more of the Elements and Principles.  During this class, students will use a variety of art media and materials, including drawing, ceramic hand-building, acrylic plastic sculpture, color-mixing, positive & negative space designs, line designs, and as many more ideas and projects as we can smash into one trimester of the school year.
This year we are also planning on working as a team of 3 classes to create a large art piece that will placed on permanent display somewhere around the school.

The various art media & materials are purchased by the school.  Students will probably only need to bring a pencil to class.
