During our first trimester, we will have many opportunities to learn as we:

  • Learn about the First Americans

  • Learn how Active Listening can help us work with our Reading and Writing partners

  • Write a personal narrative about ourselves

  • Read books of choice in several genres and have book discussions about them

  • Canoe on Lake Wingra and learn about the freshwater marsh environment on our campus.

  • Learn about Living Systems in Science.

  • Learn how the hydrosphere, biosphere, geosphere, and atmosphere work together in our world.

  • Hear the "Five Themes of Geography" rap that will help us learn about the 5 Themes of Geography in Social Studies

  • Review place value and expressions in Math

  • Add and subtract decimals in Math

  • Find new strategies to make sense of what we read

  • Learn how the parts of speech work together in Grammar

  • Learn about the encounters of European explorers with people in the "Not-So-New" World

  • Learn how to use an outline to organize our writing...and then write a five-paragraph essay!

  • Work to add and subtract decimals in Math


In our third trimester, we will:

  • Learn about the settlement and growth of the regions of the country following the birth of our nation

  • Learn about the work of Lewis and Clark

  • Research the history, geography, and industry of a state for the Geo Fair

  • Write an essay about our state and present it to our class

  • Learn about the Earth and Sun in Science.

  • Discover what the Industrial Revolution was all about

  • Learn about the conflicts that led to the Civil War

  • Read a novel in our Social Justice book group and plan a project together.

  • Learn about Reconstruction in the United States after the Civil War

  • Take on the 30-Day Writing Challenge!!

  • Learn about converting units of measure in Math and Science

  • Learn about patterns and graphing

  • Get acquainted with Algebra, Geometry, and Volume in Math


During the second trimester, we plan to:

  • Read and discuss our historical novels

  • Learn about colonization and settlement

  • Write a persuasive essay

  • Learn about the people, events, and battles of the Revolutionary War

  • Understand the difference between mixtures and solutions

  • Learn about chemical reactions and concentration in Science

  • Create a Revolutionary War newspaper together

  • Learn new strategies for multiplying and dividing decimals

  • Read books of choice in several genres and have book discussions about them

  • Read a Mystery novel and learn about reading closely, like a detective, to find clues and solve the mystery

  • Read and write poetry as we learn about figurative language

  • Learn how to write about what we read using text-based evidence

  • Review the importance of the subject and predicate in a sentence

  • Learn about adding and subtracting fractions

  • Multiply and divide fractions in Math
