NHRAA

Welcome to our first newsletter and once again, thank you for being a member of the Alumni Association.  We’ve only been in existence for a little over a year but we think we’ve already made an impact.  One of our goals is to keep alumni informed and provide a central location for sharing information. Remember to check the online sights www.halerayalumni.com and Past Students of Nathan Hale-Ray on Facebook for updates.

Our membership continues to grow. It covers multi generations. We have included an application form so you could share it with someone else.  Please spread the word. The more members we have the more we can accomplish.  Finances are appreciated but we are also looking for participating active members. We meet monthly at the High School. We’d love to have you attend and share ideas.

Past fund raisers have included a spaghetti dinner, a basketball jamboree (including a team from Unified Sports) and we’ve started the yearly “reunion picnic” to be held the 3rd Saturday in August. This will be our 3rd year. It’s good to come home!

Hale-Ray Electrathon Engineering Program-State Champs Again!

Dick Parker ’60 and  Bruce Freeman, Tech Education

Throughout the year, Hale-Ray High School students work as a team using design and fabrication skills to produce electric vehicles to be used in competition at Lime Rock Park. Each fall and spring they compete in the Connecticut Electrathon Engineering Challenge. The competition is sponsored by Central Connecticut State University and Lime Rock Raceway to promote engineering and alternative transportation energy sources. Students across New England design and build efficient, aerodynamic vehicles following strict safety criteria to

compete against each other. The objective is to drive a vehicle the farthest distance in one hour using a limited amount of energy (72 pounds of batteries).

Following a year of intense design and fabrication, the students of the Engineering and Product Design classes make modifications to existing cars in addition to building new vehicles. Since 2001, Hale-Ray students have manufactured more than eleven vehicles and placed first more than 26 times. As the current year moves toward spring, students are working hard to complete two new vehicles, a carbon fiber composite car and the first ever leaning metal frame vehicle. From the CAD designs to race ready completion using CNC machinery to mill sprockets, components, and body shell molds usually takes 1 ½ - 2 years.

Community support for the program and annual funding from the Ray Board truly enables these students to be successful. As a result of this program, hundreds of students have gone into careers in manufacturing, design, engineering and automotive trades. The chance to work as a team member, communicate ideas, and apply individual skills to create such an exciting product is invaluable. Provide students the resources and opportunity and it is amazing what they will achieve.

Alumni Association Awards First Scholarship – Recipient to Major in Mechanical Engineering

Roy Parker ‘80

The Nathan Hale-Ray Alumni Association was pleased to be able to award their first $500 scholarship to Alexandra (Ali) Schwenzfeir, class of 2013.  While a student at Hale-Ray, Ali was a very busy student, as she was a three sport athlete (soccer, basketball, softball), a member of the National Honor Society, Tri M Honor Society, and Future Farmers of America.  She also found time to volunteer at high Hopes Therapeutic Horse Back Riding, elementary school classrooms and East Haddam Little League.  Currently, Ali is completing her freshman year at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York.

The Alumni Association is very excited to announce that we will be able to expand our scholarship offerings.  Starting with the graduating class of 2014, the Nathan Hale-Ray Alumni Association will now distribute $500 scholarships to two graduating seniors.  We wish Ali and all graduates the best of luck!
