East Grand Outdoor Education (updated on 2-28-17)



The East Grand Outdoor Education Class is a year long elective for students grades 9-12. Many students return to take the class a 2nd year.

Upcoming Winter/Spring 2017
  • Trips to Big Rock to Ski & Board with a focus on students mentoring students, February & March and into April conditions permitting
  • Wintercamp Trip, March 2-4 via Cross Country Skiing into big Spring Brook Hut,, East Branch of the Penobscot River, Katahdin Woods and Waters Property   
Spring Canoe Races, East Grand Adventure Race.OE students take part in at least 2 races. Can be a flatwater race and enter the East Grand Adventure Race as a pair or as part of a relay team and do only one or more segments including the mile  compass run, mtn. biking or paddling. 
  • April 15, Kenduskeag River Canoe Race, Bangor
  • April 29,  Houlton Canoe Race
  • May 13, East Grand Adventure Race

Mission Statement: Promoting leadership development, teamwork, trust and physical fitness while gaining an appreciation for the outdoors and all that it has to offer!

 
Benefits for our Students:
  • Students overcome fears and gain confidence as they take on new challenges such as paddling rapids, climbing the rock wall, and are placed in leadership roles.
  • Students learn the value of teamwork as they are put into situations where they need to problem solve and work as a team.
  • Students learn to lead and organize as they take ownership of the program.
  • Students gain an appreciation of the outdoors and gain the skills to safely recreate in it.
  • Students are introduced to economic opportunities in the outdoors such as guiding. 
  • Students put into practice skills learned in class when assisting other students on outings and on guided canoe trips with Canoe the Wild during the summer.
  • Students are encouraged to get outdoors for good physical activities that can be life long such as canoeing, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, snowboarding and down hill skiing, hiking, biking, etc.

  • Introduction to Canoeing
  • Deep water canoe t-rescue
  • Intro. To Poling (Keeping an old tradition alive)
  • Survival Fire Building (warming and cooking)
  • Utilizing a Tarp Shelter against the elements
  • Campsite management & river safety…before you go.
  • Planning and packing for a trip (equipment, food, maps)
  • Safely using Gas Stoves and Lanterns
  • Mt. Biking & Kayaking
  • Knots and their uses

  • Review skills learned thought-out the year and test over.
