The gear is a simple machine. It is a toothed wheel that precisely meshes with another toothed wheel. Two or more gears are used to transfer force, transform speed or change direction. The worm gear is similar to the screw, and its curved spiral will mesh smoothly with either a crown or spur gear. Using this particular gear system will change direction of movement and slow down the movement while increasing power.
In this Warm-Up, use the LEGO® parts to observe how a worm gear and a spur work together and how a worm gear and a crown gear work together. Add a LEGO® counter and crank handle to each gear system.
Questions to Answer:
Will the system work from both directions or only when you turn the crank handle for the worm gear?
How many times must you turn the worm gear (revolutions) to get the spur gear to turn once?
What direction (horizontal or vertical) does the spur gear turn in relation to the worm gear?
