What Matters.

As Pastor Steve shared with us this past Sunday, Jesus invites us to take up His yoke, and to begin to live in a whole new way. Only as we put our trust in Christ and begin to follow Him will we begin to experience true rest in this restless world.

Following Jesus is about all of life.

Putting our trust in Christ is not merely a one-time decision, or just a simple platitude that we give mental assent to. Trusting in Jesus is a way of life, where we choose to follow His teachings, even when it is not easy to do so.

Following Jesus is not merely a set of beliefs or activities.

For far too many Christians, trusting in Jesus often becomes little more than shallow lip-service... as if, as long as you claim to believe the right things, this means that you will go to Heaven when you die. For others, following Jesus is simply about a certain set of religious activities... as if, as long as you go to church services and sing worship songs and put some money in the plate, that means you are following Jesus. For others, following Jesus is directly tied to how you vote, or what you support... as if, as long as you vote for the right candidate or support the right cause, that means you are a follower of Jesus.

Following Jesus is about sacrificial love.

While all of those things may have their place, following Jesus is about so much more.  Just as Jesus lays down His life for us, He calls us to lay down our life for others.  Our love for God is not revealed through what we claim to believe, how active we are at church, or through how we vote. Our love for God is revealed through how well we love others (see 1 John 4:19-21)

Following Jesus is about trust.

We live in a broken world that is full of darkness and pain. But Jesus calls us to trust in Him, no matter how bad things get, because He has overcome the world. And as we truly trust in Him, here and now, we are not merely waiting for an escape from this broken world... we begin to partner with Jesus, as we follow Jesus, to set things right in this broken world.

The Apostle Paul once wrote that "...the only thing that matters is that your trust in Christ would work itself out in love..." (see Galatians 5:6).  May we be a people of real faith and real trust by being a people of sacrificial love.

May we walk in the Image of God this week!

Scripture of the Week

1 John 4:19-20 (NIV) -- We love because he first loved us. Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.

We had a great time at the outdoor service this past Sunday!  It was such a blessing to worship with you, fellowship & pray, and enjoy a time of instruction based on the words of Jesus.

And we were able to get it all done before the rain came pouring down!  I was so thankful to God for that!

We look forward to seeing you all again this next Sunday, as we take a look at another familiar passage.  This time from Galatians on the idea of sowing and reaping.

Because if you want real change... it's time to stop using band-aids! Hope to see you this coming Sunday!

I love being your pastor!
