Life@Eaglebrook                                 May 22nd, 2018

As Pastor Steve shared with us this past Sunday, Jesus was initiating a time of new beginnings as He declared God's blessing upon those who were poor in spirit... those who were spiritually bankrupt.

Jesus was declaring God's blessings upon all the wrong people.

As we will see in the weeks ahead, Jesus was celebrating all the wrong people. He was insisting that God was on the side of those who typically excluded... those who had nothing of spiritual value to offer (the poor in spirit), those who had suffered loss (those who mourn), those who did have a position of authority or influence (the meek), and so on.  Those who were typically overlooked, Jesus was now insisting that they were at the very center of God's favor.  The first would be last, and the last would be first.

The answer to sin is NOT religion.

All too often, we fall into thinking that the answer for sin and being spiritually bankrupt, is to make a more determined effort to try harder for God.  We will do better.  We will try harder.  We will go to church more often.  We will pray longer.  We will spend more time in the Bible.  We will follow the right list of religious rules. The list goes on and on.  But this is not what God is looking for.  God does not want our religious efforts... He wants a relationship!

Self-centered sin takes us in the wrong direction.
Self-righteous religion takes us in the wrong direction.

Both the path of sin and the path of religion takes us further away from where God wants us to be.  Both are self-serving.  Both are about us being in control.  And both have the same impact on our relationship to God.

Both sin and religion become a replacement for God.

Jesus declares that those who do not have anything spiritual to offer are blessed.  They are to be envied and celebrated.  Why? Because, the Kingdom of Heaven is wide open to them.

Jesus shows us a whole new way.

We do not earn our way into the community of God.  We do not work our way there by keeping a list of rules. We are not born into it, as if one family heritage is better than another.   The truth is... none of us measure up.  We are all excluded.  And yet, out of love, God has flung open the doors of His Kingdom and invites all of us to freely enter.

Jesus blesses and includes all the wrong people. Even you.

May we walk in the Image of God this week!

We Need Your Help!!!

Looking for a way to help out and get more involved?  Here are three ways you could be a HUGE help:

Cleaning Crews -- Each week, families help out by cleaning the church.  The more families we have to help out, the less often each family is on the rotation.  Would you consider helping out in this area?  If so, please contact Jani.
Children's Ministry -- Do you have a heart for working with children?  We could always use a few more volunteers to help in the Nursery or with our Children's Ministries.  For more information, please contact Arnie.

null Food Pantry -- Every other Thursday, we help serve at the Lakeland Food Pantry from 3pm-6pm.  This is a great way to serve and bless others in need.  We could always use a few extra hands.  Would you be willing to serve once a month?  If so, please contact Arnie.

Next Elder Board Meeting - June 11th

The next Elder Meeting is scheduled for:

Monday, June 11th at 6:30pm

If you have any issues or concerns that you would like the Elder Board to discuss at the next meeting, please talk to any of the Elders.

Scripture of the Week

Philippians 3:12-14 (NIV) -- Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.  Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind  and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal...

As we covered this past Sunday in our new series, it is truly a time of "New Beginnings" at Eaglebrook.
As we say goodbye to dear friends and partners in ministry, we also say hello to all the new faces and potential new partners in ministry!  I trust that you are just excited as I am about all the possibilities!

We celebrate Eaglebrook's 13th anniversary this coming Sunday.
While we will always have new challenges to face, Eaglebrook's future has never looked brighter.  And as each of us walk in humility (as we talked about Sunday)... and as we continue to walk in God's grace and love, and the power of His Holy Spirit...  our best days are ahead of us.
If you are in town this Memorial Day weekend, come join us as we continue our series called "New Beginnings" - as we make our way through the Sermon on the Mount!

I love being your pastor!
