When, Not If...

As Pastor Steve shared with us this past Sunday, as Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He says "...when
you pray..."
, not "...if you happen to pray..."  Jesus assumes that we all pray, it is just a matter of how we do it, and who we direct it towards...
Everyone Prays.
As we go through life, we all pray.  To one degree or another, whether we would claim to believe in God or not, everyone prays. We all have longings and desires that we feel compelled to communicate to something beyond ourselves. It may be as we are awaiting the results of a medical exam, waiting to hear back after an important job interview, or simply hoping for an open parking spot... we all seem to cry out to Something Bigger in the Universe, hoping for some sort of assistance or favor.
This "Something Bigger" can be known.
Some of us are very comfortable with the idea of God, while others are somewhat resistant in using that kind of language, possibly because of their upbringing or other religious baggage. Therefore, some choose to use language of Universe, or Spirit, or Power to refer to this Something Bigger.  But the Scriptures are not shy about using the language of God. There is a God, and this is a God who has revealed Himself to us, and who continues to reveal Himself to us.
This "Something Bigger" desires to be known.
Not only can this God be known... this is a God who wants to be known.  He does not wait for us to come to Him... this is a God who comes to us.  We see this in the Old Testament, as this God appears to Adam, to Noah, to Abraham, and to Moses.  In each story, God reveals more and more of Himself.  This God desires a relationship with us so much, He was willing to take on human flesh and live among us, showing us what He is truly like.
Knowing this "Something Bigger" shapes us.
As we begin to experience the reality of this Something Bigger, the love of our Abba Father begins to change who we are. We begin to see things in a new way, and make different choices. Our lives begin to take on a different trajectory.  God desires relationship, and that relationship transforms us.
Prayer is about Knowing and Being Known.
So, may we continue to press in to this Something Bigger.  May we continue deeper and deeper into this relationship with the Divine.  When we desire more clarity and understanding, may we look to the Scriptures and to the Person of Jesus.  And may we speak to our Father.  May we listen.  May we cry out and be comforted.  May we ask and receive.  May we seek His guidance as we live in relationship with God.
May we walk in the Image of God this week!

Matthew 6:5-13

We Need Your Help!

Looking for a way to help out and get more involved?  Here are three ways you could be a HUGE help:

Cleaning Crews -- Each week, families help out by cleaning the church.  The more families we have to help out, the less often each family is on the rotation.  Would you consider helping out in this area?  If so, please contact  Jani.

Children's Ministry -- Do you have a heart for working with children?  We could always use a few more volunteers to help in the Nursery or with our Children's Ministries.  If you are interested, please contact Arnie.

Lakeland Pantry

Food Pantry -- Every other Thursday, we help serve at the Lakeland Food Pantry from 3pm-6pm. This is a great way to serve and bless others in need.  We could always use a few extra hands. Would you be willing to serve once a month?  If so, please contact Arnie.

Next Elder Board Meeting - October 15th

The next Elder Meeting is scheduled for:

Monday, October 15th at 6:30pm

If you have any issues or concerns that you would like the Elder Board to discuss at the next meeting, please talk to any of the Elders.

Scripture of the Week

Matthew 7:7-8 (NIV) -- "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds;  and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

What a joy it was to dive into the "Lord's Prayer" on Sunday, and to experience it at an entirely different level.

May that totally revolutionize your prayer life, and call you more deeply into that epic adventure God is calling us toward.

This Sunday we look at the words of Jesus on the subject of worry, anxiety.  Ever been anxious about anything in your life before?

Come this week to hear what Jesus has to say about that!

I love being your pastor!
