Our Work

During the 2009-2010 School Year, PHC:

  • Had 30+ events as a part of National Public Health Week
  • Held “Public Health Lunch” each Friday with a guest working in a public health-related field
  • Screened Mountains of Hope, a documentary about HIV prevention efforts in Lesotho
  • Hosted a lecture at the Yale School of Public Health with Dr. William Bicknell titled “Public Health, Public Policy, HIV/AIDS, and Africa: Who Should Die?”
  • Held a meeting each semester with all of the member groups to help them connect with each other and with public health resources at Yale
  • Created a pamphlet and online list to help Yale students connect with public health volunteer opportunities in New Haven
  • Brought volunteers weekly to Leeway, a support center for people living with HIV
  • Published a weekly email newsletter to over 1000 people about public health events at Yale
  • Organized a panel discussion on the basics of US health care reform
  • Co-sponsored an evening of information about summer opportunities for pre-medical students with the Minority Association of Pre-medical Students (MAPS)
  • Tabled to recruit students to participate in the YHHAP Fast by donating a day’s worth of meal swipes to the homeless of New Haven
  • Provided a representative to the Dwight Hall Executive Committee, which manages Dwight Hall, the non-profit organization that oversees community service and social justice work at Yale University
  • Provided overnight accommodations for students attending the Universities Allied for Essential Medicines conference at Yale University
  • Designed and created hoodies for PHC Board Members
  • Helped the Yale Democrats pressure Senator Lieberman to help pass US healthcare reform
  • Teamed up with numerous student organizations to hold a benefit concert for Haiti following the hurricane
  • Organized a Master’s Tea with Tim Ziemer, the US Global Malaria Coordinator
  • Created an online calendar of all public health events on Yale’s campus
  • Organized a Master’s Tea with Michel Sidibe, the Executive Director of UNAIDS
  • Revamped its mission statement and logo
  • Relaunched the “Why Public Health?” blog with students at the School of Public Health
  • Hosted a dinner with peers to discuss public health advocacy
  • Organized National Public Health Week, a week of educational events, film screenings, advocacy actions, demonstrations, and volunteer opportunities related to public health
  • Talked to admitted students about public health at Yale during Bulldog Days

Description:Rear Adm. Tim Ziemer was appointed in June 2006 to lead the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI). The PMI is a historic $1.2 billion, five-year initiative to control malaria in Africa. 
Becoming American: Unnatural Causes Screening and Panel

Description: "Health and the Latino Community: Quality, Access and Education" and panelists will discuss their experiences and touch upon the screening (if they are able to make it). Karen Cuenca from MEChA will introduce them and moderate.

DescriptionAIDS Walk New Haven, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit 100%-volunteer organization that provides funds to 9 local charities that support the HIV/AIDS community in the greater New Haven area.  These 9 non-profit groups provide patient services, preventative medicine, education, housing, and a strong commitment to reducing and eliminating the local HIV/AIDS epidemic in our own backyard.

Join PHC for a special talk with Robert Heimer, Professor in Division of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases

Dr. Heimer has made scientific investigations of the morality and morbidity associated with injection drug use (syringe exchange programs, HIV survival in syringes, hepatitis B vaccination, hepatitis C transmission risks, overdose prevention and resuscitation, pharmacological treatment of opiate addiction). He is the Director of the Interdisciplinary Research Methods Core at Yales Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS, and Director of the Yale office of CT Emerging Infections Program
